U.S. Rep. Dale Kildee, D-Flint, will retire next year after spending the last 34 years in Congress.

The Free Press obtained a letter from Kildee’s office informing people that he was retiring and looking forward to spending more time with his 10 grandchildren.

A teacher in Detroit and Flint before entering politics in 1964, Kildee, 81, made education one of his signature issues in Congress, serving on the Education and Workforce committee and was the ranking member on the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and secondary Education.

He also is a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, which often dealt with issues surrounding Native American tribal casinos.

8. Well, he's retiring on a public service pension.
Social Security doesn't matter to him. He's set for life.

6. One of the biggest loses is the lose of a congressman in a strong
position in the seniority system. That is what we lost when we were dumb enough in NE MN to let craavack push Oberstar out. When these older people leave our party loses not just the state they are from. He has been a good congressman.
