Bachmann quits church
Source: MSNBC

CNN reports that Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann has quit her church.

Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman, and her husband, Marcus, withdrew their membership from Salem Lutheran Church in Stillwater, Minnesota, last month, according to church officials.

The Bachmanns had been members of the church for more than 10 years, according to Joel Hochmuth, director of communications for the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, the broader denominational body of which Bachmann’s former church is a member.

The Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod has drawn criticism for being anti-Catholic, CNN adds.

"We identify the Antichrist as the Papacy," the denomination's website says. "This is an historical judgment based on Scripture."

1. Martin Luther and the Roman Catholics have this history, you see...
...but frankly, I'm surprised that some synods are still toting this line.

2. "Indeed, she has condemned anti-Catholicism."
"Indeed, she has condemned anti-Catholicism. Just as President Barack Obama is not responsible for the views of Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Rep. Bachmann must be judged on the basis of her own record."

Indeed! I'd like to hear some of her statements condemning anti-Catholicism.

At least this makes bring up Rev. Wright a bit a a problem for the right....

8. Well, actually... she didn't condemn anti-Catholicism.
What she did was deny that her church believes the Pope to be the Anti-Christ.

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/07/michele-bachmanns-church-the-pope-is-the-anti-christ.php

Bachmann: Well that's a false statement that was made, and I spoke with my pastor earlier today about that as well, and he was absolutely appalled that someone would put that out. It's abhorrent, it's religious bigotry. I love Catholics, I'm a Christian, and my church does not believe that the Pope is the Anti-Christ, that's absolutely false.

Obviously, denying that her church believes something is not the same as condemning the belief itself. It is typical Bachmann hypocrisy, of course.

13. In other words, she lied.
Quite a stretch from that whopper to a defense of Catholics. Thanks for pointing this out.

16. Isn't not knowing what her church believes, or lying about it, a problem
Did her pastor, whom she allegedly questioned, not know what was on the church's website?

6. My guess is that this won't be as nearly as big an issue as it was in 2008.
What happened in 2008 was a national disgrace, and it is a permanent stain on our media.

18. Many fundamentalists believe you don't change churches. "You grow where God
planted you."

Then again, righties seem to have endless capacity for double standards and rationalizing away anything. So, who knows?

Time will tell.

11. The Catholic League standing up for Obama?
Funny, the way they bash gays, Muslims, George Soros and call Obama the Abortion President. The League's own president, Bill Donohue, was formerly a member of the Heritage Foundation and a rabid hater of all things progressive. Not to mention placing blame on victims of clergy sex abuse on the victims themselves. But, they had a kumbaya moment with Hagee when he said he didn't mean calling the Church the Whore of Babylon, so one with Michelle wasn't a stretch. I guess birds of a feather can overlook a multitude of sins.

12. Well, at least she's a woman of conviction.
I'm sort of a benign observer where religion is concerned, but who throws their church under the bus while running as a Christian conservative?

The Bachmanns creep me the hell out.

Someone who really does not believe what she says she believes.

She only believes in the Christofascist BRAND.

22. “primarily views the office of the papacy as the anti-Christ, not the individual popes themselves.’’
Edited on Sat Jul-16-11 07:11 AM by Faryn Balyncd

Oh!!

".....I love Catholics, I’m a Christian, and my church does not believe that the pope is the anti-Christ, that’s absolutely false.’’

Bachmann also said that her pastor, the Rev. Marcus Birkholz, told her he was “appalled that someone would put that out.’’

According to Hochmuth, the pastor told Bachmann that WELS “primarily views the office of the papacy as the anti-Christ, not the individual popes themselves.’’

Asked for comment, Birkholz said Thursday, “I have been asked by my congregation not to give any more interviews.’’
