Pastor resigns at Raytown MO church
Edited on Sat Jul-16-11 08:06 AM by pstokely
Source: KC Star

The Rev. Paul Brooks, longtime senior pastor of the 5,000-member First Baptist Church of Raytown, has resigned over “moral failures.”

A female church employee, Pat Windham, director of Christian education, also resigned.

A church press release said Brooks and Windham admitted to “activities that may have run afoul of the church’s moral guidelines.” Both are married with children.

4. How sad (sarcasm thingy)
I know where that church is. Drive by it on the way to my daughter's home in Lees Summit. Does it surprise me, no. Hypocrisy is in full bloom in the religious megachurches across this country. They go hand in hand with their political ideology of Republicanism. Reading the article, the son had some run-ins with a possible sexual assault charge which was later dismissed. It's ok is you are a Baptist or a Republican, but gay's and women, the poor, homeless, unemployed, trade unions, teachers, public employees, elderly....well you know what they would say to them. Morally bankrupt bottom scum suckers.

6. Another of those faulty 'sanctifications' apparently
I notice that many of the 'Sacramental Holy Unions' between 'one and one woman' seem to be functioning below the level advertized. This is striking, because the President and others who oppose marriage equality claim that God Himself designs each of these unions, and 'sanctifies' them. Apparently that process is in need of some quality control. I mean, the President says married straights have a 'spiritual element' that gay folks lack. So what, do the extra marital fuckings of straights also have a 'spiritual element'? Is the affair 'sanctified by God' or what?
All very confusing. God made Unions, yet they are defective. How odd, really.

10. god didn't make marriage... marriage is a contract.... it is a financial union basically.
two people can live together without it and keep their financial shit separate. marriage is what puts it together for the state. my husband and i lived together for ten years before we got marrired. and the marriage was the piece of paper part of it.... we were 'married' already. god has nothing to do with it. they can say that shit all they want. That is the problem. people claim god is involved in this. You can make that commitment without a piece of paper. The piece of paper is about the state.

27. Absolutely correct!!!
It's a contract!

My Reich-wing repuke friends do that defense of marriage and, "marriage is from God" thing, and I go after them. I just ask them, "When you decide that you want out of the marriage, who do you call first - your priest, or your lawyer?"

You are married when you and your minister sign the marriage license, and the license is filed with the court, making it a contract.
Divorces are also filed and granted - by courts!

32. In some churches, legal divorce doesn't mean you're not married.
In the Roman Catholic Church, you may be divorced in the eyes of the state, but the union still exists in that you vowed before God and everybody that you were joining together. Thus, if you want to be free to marry someone else, you'll have to go through the Church's annulment process, which is rather lengthy and involves a lot of paperwork and dredging up the bad memories and such; and then a Tribunal (at which you are not present) will review your case to determine if perhaps the marriage had not been undertaken by the parties in the spirit intended, and thus perhaps the vow is moot and the marriage had not been sanctified by God after all.

11. the question is:
Edited on Sat Jul-16-11 08:54 AM by SemperEadem
did they know that their activities ran afoul of the church's moral guidelines before/while they were engaging in the heavy thigh sweats or did they discover that it ran afoul after the fact? /sarcasm

seems to me that if they knew before entering into this that it was wrong and they did it anyway, not giving a good god damn about what they were choosing of their own volition to do, then they should be shamed until they draw their last breath and never be allowed any room from this. They're both old enough to know better.

25. That's the risk you take being pious.
When you double-down on being holier than the rest, a small moral failing becomes a huge, career-halting catastrophe.

Of course, "huge moral failing" is, within certain tolerances, relative.

This is why I could never be a pastor. You have to be black-or-white in a world that was painted rainbow shades of gray.

41. So many scandals in this church. Someone will surely write a book.
The preacher's son impregnated a teenage girl who sued him for child support. He was in preacher school at the time and got expelled. Daddy tried to cover it all up.

And this church is a mega monster. They have a gym, a movie theater, a coffee house and two schools. The high school hosted John McCain during his 2008 campaign.

The former building they used - before they built the mega monster - sat empty in downtown Raytown for years and the city finally paid several million dollars to have it torn down.

These people are just scummy. So glad to see them going down.
