Bush Pushes Renewal of Patriot Act
Sat Apr 17, 2004 10:13 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush on Saturday urged the U.S. Congress to renew the Patriot Act, the post-Sept. 11, 2001 law that beefs up law enforcement powers, as he sought to highlight his national security credentials.

5. Now you're talkin', rooboy!
It would be novel seeing an Independent Counsel do something beyond peeping into a President's private life.

Of course, we don't know how Ken Starr would cope if he had to tackle some BIG stuff.

3. Why now?
Edited on Sat Apr-17-04 10:41 AM by Dover
Is it an excuse or a set up (going to be the reason given why a future attack couldn't be avoided)?

The pieces of the Patriot Act he passed over the X-mas holidays just after the Congressional session had ended and during the big Saddam capture news, was barely discussed in the media. Not by the Reps OR the Dems.

So are we to believe that the Patriot Act is dead, or would not be renewed by either party? It seems to me that it IS alive and well and being inserted into our lives in small "digestible" and covert ways.

8. Oh really....?
Let's see Kerry come out swinging. Seriously, Kerry stated that the
Patriot Act was "wrong" and that he should not have voted for it.
Other senators have stated the same thing... Now, if they renew it,
then we'll know for sure that we live in a dictatorship...

Enjoy....

9. So, when's the expected Congressional vote: 4:30 in the morning during
a Friday night session?

You can expect a vote in secret when the media is asleep for the week-end . . .

10. HA! Bush is losing control. The spinning top, spinning out of control!
Someone should float a request to release Clinton's Presidential documents-

11. At my Town Meeting on Wednesday ...
... we passed a resolution condemning the Patriot Act Ñ joining dozens of other towns in Massachusetts and quite a few states.

We don't need "Patriot" I, nevermind "Patriot" II !

12. Bush wants to renew PATRIOT and he also wants PATRIOT II
Kerry wants to keep PATRIOT, with some minor modifications, and has not said anything about PATRIOT II (I assume he would oppose it).

Dennis Kucinich wants to repeal PATRIOT altogether.

The Libertarian Party wants PATRIOT repealed.

Looks to me that if we want PATRIOT gone, we better vote for Kucinich. For those Kerry convention delegates that became so during the ABB stampede, you can change your vote and cast it for the real deal: Dennis Kucinich.
