Dem Leader(Durbin) calls for Congress to investigate News Corp. phone hacking
Source: The Hill

Sen. Dick Durbin (Ill.), the second-ranking Senate Democrat, has called for congressional hearings and investigations of Ruport Murdoch’s media empire to determine whether it employed illegal practices in the U.S.

Durbin called for Congress to investigate the matter after British police arrested Rebekah Brooks Sunday morning in a widening probe of phone hacking and police payoffs by journalists who worked for Murdoch.

(snip)
Democrats are suspicious that Murdoch’s media companies, which include the New York Post, the Wall Street Journal and Fox News, may have used illegal practices in the United States.

“I can tell you that there are questions about whether the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act has been violated by Rupert Murdoch and his news empire and what’s going on in England is startling,” Durbin said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

1. Given NewsCorp's penchant for tapping into tragedy, you have to wonder if they tapped Sen Durbin...

4. even the telegraph has what they both said this morning

News Corp was raised in another of the American Sunday talk shows.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, an Illinois Democrat, kept up the pressure for a senate hearing.

“What’s going on in England is startling to think of the extent that they went to to break the law to try to report a story. We need to follow through with the FBI investigation and also with Congressional investigation.”

Senator Jim DeMint, one of the most conservative Republicans, said Congress has other things to worry about.

(Maybe we'll catch some of them caught in this scandal)

5. Hey DeMint maybe someone should remind you that
Congress had "other things to worry about" during the entire YEAR you all were obsessed with Clinton's privates. If memory serves, a pretty big ball was dropped (by everyone). If the Congress doesn't do it's job in this case, I pray that the media and law enforcement do theirs.

20. What's wrong with law enforcement and the D of J? The minute it becomes
a partisan matter, it loses credibility.

Besides, do you really want Republicans in Congress on camera, saying what a witch hunt this is, etc.

But if anything needed a more thorough cleaning out, it's them. The IQ of the electorate would explode without the hypnotic rightwing claptrap polluting minds and hearts.

7. Oh, no, no, no. Congress is much too busy
going after baseball players (who gives a damn) and throwing cash at the uber-wealthy :sarcasm:

As much as I devoutly hope they'll take Faux and Murdoch down, I don't look for it to happen.

Let public outrage grow before Fox can spin this their way.

were only exclusive to England. The players in this have been moved across oceans and into various top positions in Murdoch's empire -- including here. Why would those players only use such illegal methods in England and no where else? Of course laws were broken in the US. The question I have is this: how many lawmakers are covering their own asses?

14. This is odd.
Durbin is my Senator and I'm glad he's up on the news. But why not let DOJ/FBI do their thing? I sincerely doubt Congress can do a better job.

15. Senator Durbin: Please do what we pay you to do and focus on what really matters.
Once you and the clowns on the other side of the isle have fixed the budget, the economy, Social Security, Medicare, etc., you can begin searching for a new crisis to solve.

Until that happens, I would suggest that you leave this matter to the professionals at the Justice Department, where it belongs. You see, we expect them to do what we pay them to do too, Senator.

(The steroid hearings, we enough for me)

they can't adequately address those issues.

How can they accomplish anything if Fox has inside access to the most private of political maneuvering? Fox would blast that information- slanted the way it wanted it, of course- across the country when it deemed the time 'appropriate'.

I think this may be the most important issue they have to deal with right at this moment. They can't get anything done because Fox is always standing in the way of progress, misinforming (or outright lying) to voters.

"Loose lips sink ships". With access like this, Fox can torpedo anything the Democrats try to do, and very early on, too. You just can't win if you allow spies in your camp.

I think this needs to be addressed, and now. The sooner the better.

19. I want Murdoch in jail, but why can;t law enforcement investigate?
They're so much better at it than Congress. And they're on it already. We don't need Congress showboating on TV at our expense, esp. Republicans, who will only take Murdoch's side.

Besides, doesn't Congress have enough to worry about right now?
