Okla. governor calls for prayer to end heat wave
Source: CBS News

It is relentless, dangerous and gripping the country. A major heat wave this weekend has prompted officials in 17 states to issue heat warnings and advisories.

-----

CBS News correspondent Cynthia Bowers reports that it's been so hot for so long in Oklahoma, the governor called for a statewide day of prayer in hope of some divine intervention

"I think if we have a lot of people praying, it moves the heart of God," Gov. Mary Fallin says.

For 47 straight days, temperatures in Oklahoma City have topped 90 degrees. There has only been one day below 100 so far this month, and it's expected to top the century mark through at least next Friday.

39. Non-believer!
Are you saying that summer doesn't turn in to fall then winter because of our prayers?

That it just happens on it's own?

Next you'll say my nightly prayers aren't the only things keeping the sun rising every morning (you're welcome by the way)

41. No.
Obama is not using his official position as President to call on people to pray. He's having a *private* breakfast with people whom he invites. As such, he's entitled to pray or not pray at his discretion at said meetings.

Here, the Rethug is using her *official position* as governor to call for mass public prayer.

43. Come on now.
By having a prayer breakfast at the White House Obama is endorsing religion. You can call it private but it is the president having an event at the White House which belongs to all of us. Just because he has a "D' after his name, that does not give him a free pass.

28. And, what if other people are praying for no rain?
I've always wondered how God resolves conflicts among the people who pray to him for specific outcomes, apparently demanding that he snap into action, sometimes even changing the physical laws of the Universe, in order to satisfy the petty needs of yet another petitioner. God as short-order cook? This has always seemed blasphemous to me. So Zeke Wilkins of Thousand Sticks is praying for it to rain beer. Meanwhile the equally pious Jed Bunkum right next door is praying for a dry day. What's a God to do?

Seriously, the very idea that you can "pray" to God to do your bidding and to bring about some specific physical outcome that you desire is so ridiculous that I can't imagine a toddler believing it. And yet, I give you the Governor of Oklahoma.

You cannot petition the Lord with prayer!

14. I would take Ok heat over Illinois humidity any day!
When we lived in Oklahoma (and loved living there!) I would hang my clothes on the line and they would be dry in 30 minutes. Yes, the heat was bad at times but 115 there is like 90 in Illinois because of the dang humidity. Here in Illinois, I gave up on hanging out clothes on the line to dry because they would still be dripping wet with the humidity by the end of the day. I think God just made Oklahomans a little tougher anyway.

17. Won't work- God is ticked at Oklahoma now.
God is still pissed off at Oklahoma for passing idiot legislation banning sharia law, among other things.
The Oklahoma anti-government, republican forces have become so strong that they feel threatened by nobody other than the tea party type extremists in their own party. They compete as to who can get to the political extreme of the other. In such an atmosphere, anyone who is a part of government services, or who is a supporter of any government services such as mental health, public health, family and child services, education, or higher education, simply gets the nose-wave.

Well, God is going to show them a few things. Like heat. Lots and lots of heat.

We'll see.

I say he, because it's obvious isn't it? God is a he. Period. If he were a she then she would have to have a higher male deity to succumb to, and wouldn't be nearly as intelligent in designing creation. It's so obvious.

And if you pray hard enough you can get god to do what you think he should be doing all along.

so if praying makes them feel better, let them. Fuck it, man; it's not really hurting anyone if they do this.

We have found clusters with hundreds of galaxies in them, the universe(?s) is large beyond our possible comprehension, yet our leaders still 'pray' to pathetically transparent anthropomorphic local tribal 'gods' to intervene in the workings of nature?
