First Wisconsin recall election sets the stage for eight to follow

Wisconsin

A Democratic state senator from Green Bay, Wis., will defend his seat from a Republican challenger on Tuesday, the most direct opportunity yet for voters to react to Republican Gov. Scott Walker's restrictions on public-employee unions.

Sen. Dave Hansen will take on recall organizer David VanderLeest in a closely watched general election, one that sets the stage for eight more recall elections next month that could shift the state Senate's balance of power. Although Democrats and Republicans will both spin the results regardless of Tuesday's outcome, one political expert cautions against reading too much into this particular election.

"I'd hate to generalize - every district is different," said David Littig, an emeritus professor at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. "All things being equal, the incumbent has an advantage, but in different districts you might have specific issues that make the incumbent more vulnerable."

The recalls stem from the governor's efforts, ultimately successful, to take away nearly all collective-bargaining rights from most public employees. The three Democrats are being targeted after fleeing the state for three weeks to force an impasse, while six of their Republican colleagues face recalls Aug. 9 for supporting the measure. ..................

4. Dave Hanson should be a lock. His opponent is a wife beating child molester....
...the Repubs conceded this race already (no money).

They're spending a fortune elsewhere, particularly protecting Sheila Harsdorf in the NW part of the State.

We need to flip three seats to regain control of the Senate (and sanity in Wisconsin). You can help here...

7. I would hope Sen. Hansen will be a shoo-in, considering the Repukes had to hire outsiders
to fraudulently collect signatures in order to get their guy on the ballot.

10. Wisconsin Democrat Faces Recall Vote
Wisconsin Democrat Faces Recall Vote
By MONICA DAVEY
Published: July 18, 2011

The fate of one of the Wisconsin lawmakers who fled the state this year in an effort to block cuts to collective bargaining rights for public workers will be decided by voters on Tuesday.

This summer, Wisconsin is overflowing with recall elections involving nine state senators from both parties, but the balloting in the Green Bay area on Tuesday will be a first definitive outcome in the series of elections that many see as a gauge of public sentiment about the agenda of Republicans who took control of the state this year. At stake in a dizzying, unprecedented series of recall elections is dominance in the Senate, where the 19-14 Republican majority could shift if Democrats gain three seats.

Still, the outcome of the recall election on Tuesday of Dave Hansen, a Senate Democrat, may offer few larger signs of what is ahead for either party in this sharply divided state. Some observers say the particulars of this race make Mr. Hansen’s removal less likely than it might otherwise be. Mr. Hansen’s opponent, David VanderLeest, a businessman who led the political movement to recall him in the first place, has raised less money, has faced legal problems and has drawn only tepid support from some Republican leaders who tried to get a different candidate on the ballot.

In most of the races, the essential fight is simple.
