Cisco To Cut Workforce By 11,500 Employees
Edited on Mon Jul-18-11 07:46 PM by Amerigo Vespucci
Source: Huffington Post

Cisco Systems plans to cut its workforce by 11,500 employees as part of its plan to cut annual expenses by $1 billion and revive its business.

Cisco said on Monday that it would cut 6,500 employees. Of those, 2,100 employees will take early retirement.

The company also plans to sell its manufacturing facility in Juarez, Mexico, to Foxconn and transfer 5,000 employees to the contract manufacturing company as part of the deal.

Analysts had predicted thousands of job cuts after Cisco said in May that it planned to reorganize the company which has been losing ground in the network equipment business. The company announced more cuts than some analysts expected.

2. I was part of the 8500+ bloodbath in 2001.
My motto has always been "Fuck Cisco." It's the home of throat-cutting, back-stabbing weasel behavior at its worst. I worked there for a year and a half. It felt like a decade. I got the flu three times in one year, one instance of which turned into walking pneumonia.

11. Stress. Non-stop stress.
I was also chain smoking then, too. About two packs a day. But my resistance was always down and I just succumbed to every little virus that was being passed around.

10. Doubly, China is screwing Cisco
Companies and the government have been finding counterfeit routers for years now.

China makes the Cisco equipment on one side, and makes the counterfeits to compete on the other.

9. One of the "perks" of working at Cisco...
...is that in your birthday month, you are invited to "Breakfast with John Chambers." It's not a one-on-one where he takes you to Denny's and lets you order a Grand Slam breakfast. No, it's a cattle call, where they round up everyone else who has a birthday in that month and put you in a meeting room and have food catered from the Cisco cafeteria. And Chambers kind of is "there" in teh middle of it all and the drones eat there breakfast and go "WOW! It's JOHN CHAMBERS!"

I blew mine off. Still don;t regret it.

13. Networking hardware is completely commoditized, there is no growth business here
The networking gear for our new location came in under $2000. Gigabit switches, routers and wireless hardware. Our current location equipped in 2004 cost about $12,000 to equip at the time. The number of enterprises that need "Cisco" grade hardware is small and getting smaller. That is why they bought Liknksys.

This will be the territory of niche vendors, not companies the size of Cisco.
