LulzSec say they'll release big Murdoch email archive
Source: The Register UK

The hacktivists behind a hack on The Sun's website claim to have extracted an email archive which they plan to release later on Tuesday.

News International's systems were hacked on Monday night. As a result, visitors to The Sun's website were redirected towards a fake story on the supposed death of Rupert Murdoch by infamous hacktivist collective LulzSec. The group also redirected visitors to the main News International website to the LulzSec Twitter feed. In addition, the hack may have allowed LulzSec to gain access to News International's email database.

Sabu, a prominent member of LulzSec, said via Twitter that the group was sitting on emails of News International staffers that it planned to release on Tuesday.

Brooks (then called Wade), edited The Sun between 2003 and 2009, and – at least according to LulzSec – had been using the password 63000 to access her email account at the paper. As IT blogger John Graham-Cumming points out, 63000 is the same number as the text tip-off line used by the Sun.

2. Why? In the US at least, the Fourth Amendment only applies to government action...
If someone breaks into your house, without government encouragement or assistance, and finds evidence of criminality, they can turn it over to the police and it can be used against you.

4. Prosecutors would have to obtain a copy through legal means
doesn't mean that the Lulz copies won't tip them off as to what is there

13. The internet is legal means. Look at it this way
If a man breaks into a house and throws a meth lab into the street, the police can arrest the homeowner for having an illegal meth lab. All materials admissible in court. The homeowner has not right to privacy when his stuff is in the street.

The internet is a big wide open street. Which is why one should be careful about what one posts on it.

5. Finds? or plants?

If someone breaks into my house and turns over "evidence of criminality" to the police, then the obvious claim is that the burglar planted it there.

To the extent that anyone has been hacking into machines where evidence resides, then there is a serious problem of spoliation of that evidence.

11. Yes

Anything digital can be forged. I deal with a lot of digital evidence, and with "experts" who aren't.

See this one:

MIAMI — Assertions by the prosecution that Casey Anthony conducted extensive computer searches on the word “chloroform” were based on inaccurate data, a software designer who testified at the trial said Monday.

21. Evidence found in your house didn't have a sender, receiver and 12 intervening IPs on its way.

No kind of message is more documentable and confirmable for authenticity than an e-mail.

PS - I see in this report it's now LulzSec and not Anonymous. Which makes me wonder if this event has really happened at all.

12. Nope. In fact just the opposite
They are only inadmissible if they were gathered illegally by police or other servants of the court. (read: the state or the government)

6. Dumb move in my opinion
First messing with a police investigation is never a good idea if you're looking for the truth. Second, why shift the story that could lead to the opportunity to feel sorry for those employees who had nothing to do with the hacking or bribing?

8. I could not agree more!!!
Anonymous is just as stupid hacking Rebekah Brooks email...They are going to turn them into victims & like you said possibly jeopardize a police investigation.

Plus, these two groups have done many things I disagree with in the past...They do not get my support.

18. I think there's a much
better chance when people aren't obstructing an investigation. I can't believe anyone thinks further hacking/dumping info will help at all.
