Poll: Voters would reject Emergency Manager law
By Eartha Jane Melzer | 07.19.11 | 9:42 am

A strong majority of Michigan voters would vote to repeal the state’s Emergency Manager law if given the opportunity, according to a Gongwer News Service poll.

Public Act 4 — the Emergency Manager law — allows political appointees to take over financially troubled local governments, fire elected officials and break contracts.

The poll, conducted by EPIC/MRA surveyed 600 likely voters between July 9-11 and found that a 53-34 percent majority would reject the law, that independent voters would reject it by 58-29 percent, and that 60 percent of Northern Michigan voters would overturn it.

EPIC/MRA President Bernie Porn told Gongwer that the law had slightly more support among Republicans and supporters of Gov. Snyder.

1. Voters against the unilateral overriding of democratic government?
Well, I'm glad to hear that at least.

3. "Emergency Manager" is just a new name for "tyrant".
"Emperor" and "Dictator" and "Supreme Leader" are all out of fashion.

4. You forgot "czar"
That word seems to fascinate GOPers.

5. In my defense I have to say it's a very long list with a long history behind it.
Some people just will not be satisfied with anything less than a despot to rule over them, and everyone else too.

6. Yeah, I've been chuckling at the irony ....
... of all the Teabaggers decrying Obama's tyranny for trying to improve health care coverage, all while Republican governors around the country are taking truly dictatorial action against the voters.

8. It's nothing to chuckle about
It is a very, very desperate situation.

7. If votes meant anything in MI, there wouldn't be the law in the first place
This is kind of a bizarre poll. I am sure the residents of most dictatorships would vote not to live in one, but since they don't get to vote, who cares?

It's going to take some somewhat extra-legal activities to get the dictatorship overthrown, and the people with whom I have been talking are still at the petition-signing stage. A lot of fear of hate radio and teabaggers here.

9. When I signed the petition to recall Snyder, there was also
a petition to get rid of the EFM. I signed that, too. Lots of nail biting here, as the recall group is not releasing any numbers yet. We don't know where we stand.
