Hacking Suspect Neil Wallis Linked to Tory (General Election) Campaign

Source: The Independent (UK)

By Theo Usherwood | Tuesday, July 19 2011

Hacking suspect Neil Wallis may have provided "informal advice" to David Cameron's communications chief Andy Coulson before the general election, the Conservative Party said today.

Sources in the party said the advice had "nothing to do with the phone-hacking inquiry"

=snip=

Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson and his assistant commissioner John Yates, who both appeared before the Home Affairs Select Committee today, resigned after being linked to Mr Wallis, deputy to Mr Coulson during his time in charge at the News of the World.

It was also alleged that Mr Wallis arranged a stay at luxury health resort Champneys for Sir Paul and his wife as he recovered from surgery.

3. I only wish.
This thing probably has a long way to go yet before anyone like Cameron is directly involved, and then I imagine (though that man IS an idiot) he's had people around him bright enough to find ways around admitting any wrong-doing.

4. I would doubt that.
There seems to be much more interest here on DU with respect to this subject than with the majority of the UK population who couldn't really give a shit about it.

7. Our tv analysts here in the UK
Edited on Tue Jul-19-11 02:53 PM by dipsydoodle
point out the by and large the UK public are more concerned about jobs, housing , rising fuel costs etc than a temporary debacle concerning the media. In some respects it surprises me the the US public have no equal concerns. I do of course assume the views expressed on DU are representative of the US public ?

Aside from that most would shudder at the thought of an election and any risk whatsoever of landing up with Morribund Minor as PM. Just imagine - half way through a debate and he gets sent to bed with no supper.

8. The public here is riveted by jobs
That does not mean it is not getting close. To use a us example, Watergate was popular with the political class and government geeks. Same shit, but at an international level.

11. The Royal stuff
was The Mirror doing the same thing according to The Guardian . Hence the joke about The Mirror's unsubstantiated claim about 9/11 hacking.
