Hansen retains Senate seat in recall, defeats VanderLeest

By Lee Bergquist of the Journal Sentinel

July 19, 2011 8:54 p.m. |(17) Comments

Sen. Dave Hansen (D-Green Bay) defeated Republican challenger David VanderLeest on Tuesday in the first general election of nine recall elections in Wisconsin this summer.

Hansen heavily outspent VanderLeest, who became the only Republican in the race after Rep. John Nygren (R-Marinette) failed to obtain the necessary number of signatures to get on the ballot.

The incumbent senator declined to criticize VanderLeest for his legal troubles. But the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee hammered away at the Republican for problems that included allegations of domestic abuse.

This is a big deal even though ValderLeest was a sleeze. We have ONE now and need 5 MORE before the Wisconsin season of recalls concludes (NET gain of 3) to take over the WI,
Senate.

36. No, Republicans are not omnipotent, being able to steal or manipulate elections at will.
Especially when Democrats bother to turn out and vote.

57. They aren't omnipotent, but they do cheat & steal elections
Look at the SC voting there where some cities had more votes than residents and others had o votes recorded. Repugs lie steal and cheat - that's what they do. they also own the voting machines and hack them at will. Maybe this time they let a Dem win, but don't think they won't get very inventive when the voting goes thru that would put them in the minority. That vote will be hacked, I would bet on it.

.... republican vote in this country and they will almost always vote republican ....

still 66% v 34% win is an ass kicking of huge margins ..... it puts the victory out of
the "Waukesha County fudge factor range"

Scott has to be shittin' kittens .... and I think this was in Green Bay which used to be big

41. Last week's Dem primary turnout CRUSHED the GOP counts
Here is a quick stat that cannot be overlooked, and speaks to voter intensity in Wisconsin. It looks like the two GOP primaries tonight in the Badger State will have turnouts in the 15,000 person range, give or take. The turnouts last week on the Dem side ranged from 21,700 to over 35,000.... The Republicans are clearly lagging behind the Democrats in voter intensity. That could speak well for Democratic chances next month to reclaim the state Senate.

3. “Show me what Democracy Looks like! This is What Democracy looks like!”
I chanted that phase over and over during the Capitol protests..

http://elections.wispolitics.com/

.....Hansen noted that while many believed it would be an easy victory, all of three Assembly members from the district are Republican.
......

Borrowing a line from Steve Kagen, who was in the crowd, Hansen said some people believe government and politics is for the wealthy

“I say its about our seniors, our children and the working men and women of this state,” he said to cheers.

Following his speech, activists in the crowd repeated a refrain popular during the Capitol protests over the budget repair bill: “Show me what Democracy Looks like! This is What Democracy looks like!”:yourock: :headbang: :fistbump: :loveya: :dem: :kick: :hi:  :bounce: :toast:

39. I was there, I heard the chants. What democracy also looks like is when people show up and vote
because as wrong as we believe those who voted for Walker last November were, what they were doing was also what democracy looks like and I'm sure that some of them thought that as well. I know when I voted last November that was what democracy looked like for me.

Somehow in all of this I am reminded of that old saying, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".

59. I agree
That's why I would vote for a semi-conservative Dem like Bill Nelson over the real conservative, because those are batshit crazy. That's why I will vote for Obama, even though I won't work for him or contribute one dime to him. He'll still be better, by an oz. -2 then the Repug who's running. Voting for anyone else would be a waste of my vote.

This leaves eight races to go. On August 9, general elections will be held in six races targeting incumbent Republicans. Then on August 16, two more races will be held targeting incumbent Democrats.

42. So Much for the dumb vs. evil argument
The fact that David VanderLeest got 10,601 votes is astonishing. Everyone was informed of his violent crimes, police record, and failure to pay property taxes in over 3 years. That over 10,000 persons would go out and vote for the slug says alot for how low Repugs really are when looked at objectively.

64. Brothers ans Sisters in Wisconsin, congratulations 98% of us "real Americans" salute you and kn
recognize that your fight is our fight to stop the bought and paid for Republicans from further destroying our states and our nation with their forced draconian rule. We must fight for election reform to limit the Republicans theft of elections, we must fight to end corporate bribery of elected officials who then do the bidding of the corporations instead of "We the people", we must find a way to remove from the Supreme Court those who would take bribes and do the bidding of the corporations, rather than sitting on the court as impartial judges using only the rule of law in making their decisions, we must rid our halls of government of the paid lobbyists who do the bidding of the corporations and get preference over the average citizen because of their ability to bribe those who decide what to do for their corporate rulers instead of We the People. In short, just as Wisconsin is fighting to battle their Koch owned corporate Republican government in their state, we must do the same thing on a larger scale to take back our government from those who no longer fear We the People, but fear the wrath of corporations who hold their re-election purse strings. We now have an out in the open corrupt government where Republicans don't even try to hide their contempt for the average people, even going so far as threatening to let this country default on our national debt and causing further financial chaos and suffering for the majority of the citizenry. Thank you Wisconsin for showing the rest of us what we must do. The question is, when will we all stop being distracted, stop being fearful, stop being manipulated and stop living in our malaise in order to show those who have already concluded that we can and will do nothing, that they are wrong and have miscalculated the resolve of We the People?
Lou
