Israeli spy killed in Christchurch quake: reports

The Southland Times says an Israeli who was crushed to death in a van was found with at least five passports on his body.

It says the Israeli was part of a group suspected of trying to hack into the police computer system.

Three other Israelis in the van reportedly left the country within 12 hours.

Prime minister John Key says he will not comment on the reports in detail because it is not in the national interest.

But he has confirmed Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu rang him four times on the day of the quake.

Mossad agents were caught seven years ago and convicted of identity theft for illegally obtaining New Zealand passports.

But Key said an investigation found no evidence linking the group of four Israelis and their country's intelligence service, the Mossad.

"The unusual circumstances which triggered the investigation was the rapid departure from the country of the three surviving members of the group of Israelis in question," Key said.

"Security agencies conducted the investigation and found no evidence that the people were anything other than backpackers," he said.

Key said he was told that Mizrahi was found with only one passport belonging to a European country. Another Israeli passport in his name had been handed to Israeli authorities in New Zealand by his travelling companions before they returned home.

"None of the passports were New Zealand passports," Key said.

7. I think this story could be a bit of a dud...

Relations between Israel and NZ soured a few years back after Israelis were caught using NZ passports (sound familiar?) and after Israel apologised, things have started coming good. I doubt Israel would pull a stunt like that, and besides I'm not sure what gain there could possibly be in infiltrating the Kiwis security. But more important is that the NZ Prime Minister is denying that the guy killed in the earthquake was a Mossad agent...


New Zealand's prime minister has denied that a group of Israelis caught up in the devastating Christchurch earthquake in February had links to the Israeli secret service Mossad.

John Key said security agents had investigated Ofer Mizrahi, one of three Israelis who died in the quake.

The probe was triggered by the rapid departure of three other Israelis who had survived the quake, he said.

There was no evidence that the group had Mossad links, he added.

He confirmed however that Mizrahi was found to have two passports - one European and one Israeli.

"Security agencies conducted the investigation and found no evidence that the people were anything other than backpackers," Mr Key said in a statement on Wednesday.

9. This article in Haaretz details more of the strange behavior surrounding his death:

The three Israelis who survived the car crash that killed Mizrai fled the scene and left him behind, the report continues, saying Mizrahi had five passports. New Zealand security services suspected he was a Mossad agent after the Israeli search party took interest in his many passports and after his three friends' quick departure back to Israel. Security services also took note that a Facebook page set up in remembrance of Mizrahi has only five "likes."

When you're with a group of people and you're killed and they immediately leave your body there and all catch flights back to (whatever) country, it looks suspicious. I doubt he was probably Mossad, but he could have been an intelligence operative of some sort. There is also the very real possibility that he had nothing to do with the Israeli government but was, in fact, involved in organized crime or some attempted corporate espionage. One would imagine that if he were a Mossad agent and traveling with Mossad agents, they would probably have some better plan than an amateurish cut-and-run.

From much of what I've read, Russian organized crime in Israel & Russia is as sophisticated and well-financed in some ways as the Israeli & Russian intelligence services are.
