Museum Guard Boots Lesbian Hand-Holders
Source: NBC Bay Area News

Holding hands in public might be a Faux pas for some but in "anything goes" San Francisco it's hard to imagine offending anyone with a little PDA.

But the San Francisco Chronicle's C.W. Nevius tells the story of one couple that was asked to leave a San Francisco museum for doing just that.

An eyewitness tells the seasoned columnist that she saw "a young lesbian couple" arguing with a security guard at the Contemporary Jewish Museum Sunday afternoon.

The security guard allegedly told the couple that they were not allowed to hold hands in the museum. The couple demanded to see someone in charge at the museum and a small crowd began to gather around them as the argument ensued.

Just a reminder that bigotry of every kind still permeates all areas of the country. :(

1. Some people think that all of SF is like the Castro.
That's like saying that all of L.A. is like West Hollywood. I can't believe that the museum went that far, though......at a Gertrude Stein exhibit!

3. Was it really a Gertrude Stein exhibit?! That's got to be some kind of joke.
If that's the case, this was obviously some elaborate art/comedy piece.

19. That's what I thought, but apparently it's not.
At a Gertrude Stein exhibit in San Francisco. Who'd a thunk it?

Edited on Wed Jul-20-11 07:24 AM by Rebubula
I was told by many people at DU that bigotry like that ONLY exists in the Deep South.

This is unpossible....not in the enlightened California!!!!!

12. Exactly
Hatred is thriving in all 50 states. FUX "News" and the Teabaggers have exacerbated it, but they didn't create it.

18. Oh, please
Are you saying with a straight face that there isn't more discrimination against gay people and other minorities in the south? Have you heard of the Civil Rights era? Was that focused on the mid-Atlantic states or California? Was California's governor refusing to integrate CA schools?

Look, you may enjoy living in the south, and there's certainly bigotry everywhere in the country, but you can't say that it isn't much, much greater in the deep south. Do I need to quote polling data?

And where did Jim Crow laws come from?

6. What kind of world is this? I can remember when it was normal
for girls to hold hands. I really must have gone into a Rip Van Winkle sleep.

8. By what "right" does anyone have to eject people from holding hands?
For that matter, what "right" does anyone have to interject themselves into such a situation?

This is a violation of Human Rights and the individual that called this couple on this needs to be disciplined.

9. Tell most SFer's you're from Oakland and get at taste of their bigotry
They couch is in phrases like "I don't see how you can live in a place like that" and " The people over there are nothing more than animals" both statements I have heard fairly often uttered by San Franciscans. There are other statements that aren't so neutral sounding.

As for accepting the LGBT community, not so much in certain areas of that city.

10. +1
In fact, tell some SFers you're from anywhere else in the Bay Area and they're quick to tell you all their stereotypes about the place.

You're absolutely right that in some parts of the uber tolerant city by the bay there are residents who hold on to some deep-seated prejudices.

However, it's an only-in-San-Francisco story that lesbians would be tossed out for holding hands at the Gertrude Stein exhibit.

15. + eleventy million
You'd think that one county was the end-all and be-all of the Bay Area. That's what happens when you believe your own (tourist) hype.

17. i think that provincialism, at least towards Oakland has ended
in many ways, SF/Oakland and Berkeley are kind of in the same neighborhood in the Bay Area.

but regional chauvinism still persists from SF towards other parts of the Bay Area, especially the East Bay east of the Oakland Hills and towards San Jose.

i think it's great that people in SF, especially natives are proud of their city (i was born in SF), but i wince at some stuff i hear said that, "what other city is there?"

"Oh...New York, LA, London, Tokyo, etc....San Francisco is a great city but come on!"

But I think that's fading.
