Ads to pressure Nelson (D-Ne) on debt
Source: Omaha World Herald

By Robynn Tysver

A conservative group is trying to put pressure on Democratic U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson to oppose raising the debt ceiling without significant spending cuts.

The national group, Concerned Women for America, have purchased television time in Nebraska and three other states, where they will run an advertisement criticizing Congress' "spending addiction."

The ad is a parody of a typical drug commercial. In it, a so-called miracle drug called "Spenditol" has been invented in Washington, D.C., to cure the nation's debt problem. The ad then lists the side effects of the drug, including "a mountain of debt."

Penny Nance, president of the group, said Nebraska was chosen because they wanted to influence Nelson.

1. Omigod, NO, not ads. Ads against a politician? Oh, the humanity!
I suppose the only response is to cave, as opposed to running ads of his own?

Doesn't he have a fairly comfortable war chest? If not, what was the point of all his pro-corporate votes?

2. When did Ben Nelson switch parties?
I thought he was still a republican.

3. I don't know about eastern Nebraska but out here in the panhandle
I would say 60% of the folks are on SS and medicare. That is just a guess as I have no figures. I realize we are a smaller population (very rural)than the eastern part of the state. If he tried to mess with SS or Medicare I think he will not be reelected.

4. another phony baloney PR move by the wingnutz
Look up "Concerned Women for America" on Google and you will find a cookie-cutter website linking to other rightwing cookie cutter web sites. Now, I happen to know a bit about this as one of my class projects for my students is to have them look up and analyze the web sites of "right wing think tanks" and "left wing think tanks." Guess what. There are tons of the former and very, very few of the latter.

Oh and surprise surprise, there's a common thread running through all the r-w ones and it's not just the red, white, and blue color scheme.

Concerned Women of America are very concerned about issues of yesteryear. There's even a link to an article about women's libbers wanting to go bra-free, or topless. Let's see, wasn't that a news story back in about 1971? Caught in a little time warp there, Concerned Women.

On their home page, they're still carrying on about the Equal Rights Amendment!
