Straight Couples Use French Civil Unions Law Created For Homosexuals
Straight Couples Use French Civil Unions Law Created For Homosexuals

France's civil unions law originally was
intended for gay and lesbian couples, such
as this one. But now heterosexuals also
are taking advantage of the law.

(ABCNEWS.com)

P A R I S, April 17 — France resolved its debate over same-sex marriage several years ago by creating civil unions. But the law has had unexpected effects.

What began as a way to provide some legal protection for people in homosexual relationships has become a real alternative for heterosexual couples in France, thousands of whom come to municipal offices to sign "civil pacts of solidarity," or PACS, rather than get married.

4. There is no danger here! This is quite proper!
There are many people that don't want that piece of paper--many long term relationship have been destroyed when the couples got married.

In the UK there has been quite a bit of controversy about the Labour bill to allow same-sex civil unions because it does not allow the same for hetero civil unions.

We should stop religion from dictating what constitute marriage. Reform Judaism rabbis have married same-sex couples. Why should Jews adopt a definition of marriage that is Christian?

3. What happens when they split up?
If they have property or accumulate property and money? How does it get split up? Same as if in a divorce?

I know that the issue of child custody and support won't be any different... well maybe more work if the judge doesn't take that into consideration the first time.

5. Isn't this the same as common law union?
If so it's been available in Canada to both hetero and homosexuals for years.
