Repeal question on Ohio's union law makes ballot
Edited on Thu Jul-21-11 11:33 AM by cal04
Source: Associated Press

Ohio voters will have the chance to decide this November whether the state's contentious new collective bargaining law should be repealed.

Secretary of State Jon Husted (HYOO'-sted) says the group We Are Ohio has gathered enough valid signatures to put a ballot question on the law before voters.

The law signed by Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sik) in late March bans public employee strikes and restricts collective bargaining rights for more than 350,000 teachers, police officers, state employees and others. While unions can continue to negotiate wages, they cannot bargain on health care, sick time or pension benefits.

The We Are Ohio campaign says 10,000 volunteers and some paid workers circulated petitions to get the referendum before voters. The coalition of labor groups and others contends the law is an unfair attack on workers.

7. 915,456 valid signatures, four times as many as are necessary.

That's about a fifth of Ohio's electorate and has to be some kind of a record.
