Aussie police shut Greenpeace HQ, seize evidence

SYDNEY (AP) — Australian police shut down the Sydney offices of environmental group Greenpeace on Thursday after its activists destroyed a genetically modified wheat crop at an experimental farm run by the government.

Police in Canberra, the Australian capital and the site of the experimental farm, said "an amount of property was seized as evidence" during the Sydney raid and it will undergo forensic analysis. No arrests were made.

Greenpeace activists, wearing mock hazard suits, scaled the fences of the experimental farm last Thursday and destroyed a crop of genetically modified wheat with brush cutters. The wheat has been altered to lower its glycemic index in an attempt to see if the grain could have health benefits such as improving blood glucose levels and lowering cholesterol.

Greenpeace says it took the drastic action because of concerns over health, cross-contamination and the secrecy surrounding experiments at the farm, which were to include the first human trials of the crop.

2. Either way, anyway, humans will be over eventually as a species. Humans don't
have the smarts to survive. We will drown in our own filth we created.

4. They're already working on it, but since no one researches and publishes that, it ain't science.
It's not science until it's in the scientific journals.

They don't, in general, study any more than they have to do to obey the law.

And if they don't look for problems, they don't find them, no one publishes them, and they get to say

"that's not supported by the scientific literature."

Yet another thing that's been ruined by privatization.

3. They didn't shut the office down at all. They seized some computers...
Authorities raided Greenpeace's Sydney offices yesterday, seizing evidence relating to last week's destruction of a genetically-modified wheat experiment at a CSIRO farm in Canberra.
Greenpeace activists scaled a fence at CSIRO's Ginninderra Experiment Station and destroyed $300,000 worth of genetically modified wheat last Thursday.

The incident sparked an investigation by ACT Policing, and officers spent about two hours yesterday searching Greenpeace Pacific's Sydney offices for evidence.

Equipment and property relating to the incident were seized and police will now forensically analyse the items.

Greenpeace staff were fully cooperative with the search and the organisation's Laura Kelly said the scrutiny was welcome.
