Tim Pawlenty: Jesus Christ Is One Of My 'Heroes'
Posted: 7/21/11 06:02 PM ET

WEBSTER CITY, IOWA -- When George W. Bush came to Iowa in 1999 and named Jesus as his favorite philosopher, that statement helped boost him to a decisive win in this first-in-the-nation caucus state.

GOP 2012 candidate Tim Pawlenty is following Bush's playbook.

On Thursday, the former Minnesota governor listed Jesus Christ as one of his "political heroes" in response to a question from an Iowa voter about influential figures in his life.

Pawlenty first talked about his father -- "a big guy, a Polish guy, kinda joyful, strong" -- before listing others.

39. Santa is a pretty generous guy. I'd add him to my hero list any day.
I'd drop that judgmental "naughty or nice" bit, though and just stick with the jolly guy who wanted to give gifts to kiddies.

3. Ugh.. I hate when the nutwings use the guy who wouldn't be hanging with them, as a political prop!
Jesus can take any of this and more, but it's sad that Paw-Paw thinks Jesus would affiliate with any of the bullshit policies of the GOP, and their hate of the poor and judged in society.

In essence, he's a disgusting louse trying to get votes.

30. As described in the NT, Jesus was more of a radical.
Edited on Fri Jul-22-11 09:14 AM by No Elephants
He was advocating radical change from the existing power structures, both religious and political, not merely liberalizing existing structures.

Besides, letting your followers believe you are God incarnate is pretty danged radical.

18. This would be awesome
IF he followed the teachings of Jesus - which he does not! I went to a Catholic school run by Benedictine Monks - and they are quite the radicals let me tell you. They are the ones who taught me "love one another as I have loved you" as being the last 'law' that we needed to follow. If we all loved one another the world would be one heck of a place! The simple fact is that these so called Christians are NOT Christians! They are picking parts of the old testament - which by the way Jesus said to ignore - and basing their prejudice on these teachings. It's really way more complex than just a short post here...but believe me...true followers of Christ believe in love...that's it!

37. In the NT, Jesus boiled down most of the OT (the law and the prophets) into 2 commandments.
Edited on Fri Jul-22-11 09:33 AM by No Elephants
Matthew 22 (King James Version)

35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,

36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

I always thought that was odd, given that nothing in the Bible that I knew of had taught me to love my sinful little self at all.

Edited on Fri Jul-22-11 09:37 AM by No Elephants
As described by the Apostle Paul, who never met him, not so much.

As described many preachers, televangelists and some people who purport to be Christians anymore, also not so much.

Which bandwagon is Pawlenty on?

Paul is one of the first Christian Fundamentalists who said they were following Jesus but relied heavily on those bat-shit crazy old testament laws (all but the 10 Commandments, which really are just common sense rules).
