Phone Hacking: emails next scandal, says Tom Watson

Tom Watson, the Labour MP who helped expose phone hacking, has warned that the illegal interception of emails will be the next big scandal to emerge.

Tom Watson told The Telegraph he believes illegal practices were restricted to News International titles (PA)
By Andrew Porter, and James Kirkup6:30AM BST 22 Jul 2011

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Mr Watson said he believed the illegal practices were restricted to the News International newspaper titles and not representative of the wider industry.

Mr Watson has been pursuing News International for more than two years in a campaign which led to the disclosure that the mobile phone of Milly Dowler, the murdered schoolgirl, had been hacked. Today, he says he will continue to try to “force the truth” from News International and says that the scandal could move into a new area – email hacking – in the coming months.

“I’ve got to be careful what I say but Glenn Mulcaire was a blagger and a phone hacker,” he said.

At this point it seems the citizens of the UK NOT spied on by Murdoch papers are a minority.

1. were restricted to News International ?

That's already been disproved elsewhere especially re. Trinity Mirror Group - its matter of record. All of our media were using the same sources.

Might be best to assume that our entire UK population were affected by this and work backwards from there possibly allowing for the fact that the majority of the population don't seem to give a shit about News International issues being more concerned about jobs, housing , rising fuel costs etc.

According to BBC Radio 4's The Report, the files from Operation Motorman, which was run by the Information Commissioner's Office in 2003, were requested three months ago.
'12,000 victims'

They contain 4,000 requests from 300 journalists and 31 publications for confidential information from a private investigator, which in many cases had been obtained illegally.

The investigation found the Daily Mail had made the most requests, followed by the Sunday People and the Daily Mirror.

blagging is lying to achieve an end. Its UK slang and as such pretty meaningless outside of here.

That's the problem with slang : can get lost in translation.

:hi:

4. If you go to a rock concert without a ticket
you can sometimes 'blag' your way in by saying you're Sting and you're on the guest list.

Good luck with trying this. ;-)
