FAA furloughs 4,000 workers after funding expires, congressional 'inaction'

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) partially shut down Saturday, as Congress failed to reauthorize the agency's funding.

“I’m very disappointed that Congress adjourned today without passing a clean extension of the FAA bill," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood
said in a Friday statement. “Because of their inaction, states and airports won’t be able to work on their construction projects, and too many
people will have to go without a paycheck. This is no way to run the best aviation system in the world.”

About 4,000 FAA employees are now furloughed without pay, according to the FAA, as the Senate on Friday failed to approve a controversial
House-passed extension of taxes that help fund the FAA.

“The FAA employees who will be furloughed perform critical work for our nation’s aviation system and our economy,” FAA Administrator Randy
Babbitt said in a statement. “These are real people with families who do not deserve to be put out of work during these tough economic times.”

And this is just the start of the crap that will happen if the debt ceiling is not raised.

Why do republicans hate Americans? :grr:

4. Amazing, isn't it, how the media is all over this story....
(Insert sarcasm snarly here,) I heard it once yesterday on NPR. Of course, I've been doing my best to avoid news lately, so I may not be the best judge of coverage.

5. I'm sure the private sector quickly fill the vacuum left by these
overpaid bureaucrats. If not, charities can step up to the plate and do their fare share - after all, we don't tax them. <sarcasm>

8. Well most of the time the planes are on autopilot and

w/ all the computers and fancy stuff we really don't need those FAA workers anyway
I mean what could go wrong?

9. Good point. We probably don't need those high-paid pilots
either. We can have self-serve airlines in self-policed airspace in our self-regulating economy.

17. ATC isn't affected by this.
Still, it sucks. The reason for the partial shutdown is that the Republicans don't want any more subsidies for essential air service to smaller communities and they don't like the fact that the National Mediation Board changed the rules for how airline employees can unionize. So they're fucking the FAA.

12. The fact that the media has all but ignored this story
and/or minimized it is a complete disgrace. It's just like what they have done with states like MN when they closed down - trivializing it as if no one would feel the impact! :banghead:

14. Well being from Ohio I can't forget the wonderful job ..
.... the media did covering up the 2004 stolen election here. The media is part of the problem
not the solution and if they covered this made up crisis (which the republicans are causing) in a
half way honest manner the republicans would be chased from office and made to look like the
ass kissers to the rich that they are.

..... not counting their families and friends.

The GOP should reap the whirlwind on this stunt but w/ a corrupt media they will not even get their

So we are 100% safe... until the planes start dropping from the sky because there is no more oversight on safety or maintenance.
