Anders Brehing Breivik took part in online discussions with members of the EDL and other anti-Islamic groups

Mark Townsend in Sundvollen, Peter Beaumont and Tracy McVeigh | Saturday July 23 2011 18.59 BST

Anders Behring Breivik, the man accused of the murder of at least 92 Norwegians in a bomb and gun massacre, boasted online about his discussions with the far-right English Defence League and other anti-Islamic European organisations.

The Norwegian prime minister, Jens Stoltenberg, said Norwegian officials were working with foreign intelligence agencies to see if there was any international involvement in the slaughter. "We have running contact with other countries' intelligence services," he said.

=snip=

The disclosure of Breivik's claimed links with far-right organisations came as details continued to emerge about the rightwing Christian fundamentalist and Freemason behind Norway's worst postwar act of violence.

It was revealed that the 32-year-old former member of the country's conservative Progress party – who had become ever more extreme in his hatred of Muslims, leftwingers and the country's political establishment – had ordered six tonnes of fertiliser in May to be used in the bombing. While police continued to interrogate Breivik, who was charged with the mass killings, evidence of his increasingly far-right world-view emerged from an article he had posted on several Scandinavian websites, including Nordisk, a site frequented by neo-Nazis, far-right radicals and Islamophobes since 2009.

1. Wow...Freemason
full disclosure: I am a Freemason

My "god" is the god of Einstein, that is the mechanics of physics

Anyway - It would be interesting to see how far Freemasonry played a role in this...

Pretty sure there is no conspiracy, but Freemasonry has been just as much of a haven for Atheists (seriously - it has) as it was for Racist Neo-Calvinist

5. if you watch the video ...
he rather idolizes the Crusaders/Templars.

His "Christian fundamentalism" isn't really the kind found in the US.

His goes back to the Middle Ages, Christians vs. infidels.

(I had just read the Guardian article and had seen the reference to the video in comments there, then watched the video and came here and saw this thread ... only 301 views of the video when I looked; I imagine that will be rising. Hold your nose before reading viewer comments.)

edit again - sorry, the piece I was reading at the Guardian was

Reason must prevail in Norway's agony

The double tragedy will inevitably heighten the debates on immigration and fundamentalism

... In Britain yesterday, furious polemical arguments were already taking place around the description of Anders Behring Breivik as a "Christian fundamentalist" – some justifiably wishing to dissociate fundamentalism from Christianity. It perhaps says something about prevalent attitudes in the west that there is very little similar imperative in debates to consider on occasion the merits of uncoupling Islam from fundamentalism. ...

9. His manifesto was also published on Stormfront
I have just finished reading through what appears to be the 1,518-page manifesto and handbook of the alleged perpetrator of the worst terrorist attack in Norwegian history.

The manifesto, bylined by someone calling himself Andrew Berwick, is entitled "2083: A European Declaration of Independence" and was posted on Stormfront.org, a white supremacist website, and discovered by American blogger Kevin I. Slaughter. (UPDATE: Norwegian TV has confirmed that the author is indeed the Oslo shooter, according to the New York Times.)

In it, "Berwick" declares himself a "Justiciar Knight Commander," a leading member of a "re-founded" Knights Templar group formed at an April 2002 meeting in London. He claims the founding group has 9 members, whom he does not name, and that three other sympathizers were not able to attend the original meeting.

"Our purpose," the document reads, is to "seize political and military control of Western European countries and implement a cultural conservative political agenda."

Edited on Sun Jul-24-11 08:50 AM by fedsron2us
or is he simply throwing up blinds to confuse the authorities. This is a man who was intelligent, organised and unhinged enough meticulously to plan and execute two separate attacks on preselected targets on the same day. Nothing he has done appears to have been left to chance. I think we need to know a lot more about what he has been upto and who he has associated with over recent years rather than just accepting at face value what he has published in the immediate run upto the attacks. If anyone wanted to construct a facebook profile of an individual that would fit the lone madman then they would include references to guns, bodybuilding, hunting, soap operas about serial killers, some political links, a reference to world of war craft. Then to muddy the waters a quote from John Stuart Mill the author of On Liberty could be placed on. the Twitter account. Add in some pictures of the killer in Masonic garb and references to the Knights Templar and the internet hares would really be running. This is suddenly not passing the smell test.

and acted alone. It might make the attacks easier to comprehend As a Brit who has been uncomfortably close to more than a couple of terrorist attacks over the years I know the pain and shock they inflict on communities and individuals. I am also aware that the sort of 'spectacular' (as the IRA called them) seen in Oslo take months of planning and usually a dedicated team to execute. Now we have one individual who apparently has managed two in one day. This is quite some performance given that an organisation such as the IRA had decades of practise to perfect their techniques. At the moment the victims families just want comfort but in time if they are anything like people elsewhere in the world they will also want to know the truth about the attacks and whether steps could have been taken to stop then or to mitigate their impact. This is certainly my impression of the feelings of people who lost relatives in the horrific 07/07 attacks in London.

24. He spent nine years planning the attack
The police are now quite convinced he worked alone, although they are not ruling out other people completely. He raised money, hired the farm and registered an agrobusiness so he could buy the fertiliser, experimented with bombs, wrote his manifesto (partially plagiarized from the Unabomber), bought weapons, he even trained himself. He sold almost all his assets and moved home to his mother to finance it, including taking out 10 credit cards.

The reason he was so "successfull" on that island is that the emergency plan for Oslo works so that all the surrounding presincts go into the city to guard it when the government is attacked. But he left the city and attacked the summer camp of the left youth. That's why he was able to go alone out there for one hour shooting people. One of the victims was a plainclothes policeman off duty and unarmed.

The special police "Delta" forces entered the island via boat and apprehended him after only two minutes. He surrendered immediately, despite having lots of ammunition left.

27. The wingnuts
are getting close to head-exploding mode. I posted on another thread, that over in Freeperville, many of the Tin Foil Hat Guild are convinced the ABB is an al-Qaeda trained jihadist. As I also said, in some measure of fairness to the Freepers (who are human beings after all, though severely misguided) there are some Freepers over there, if you look through the threads, who are trying to prevent the conspiracy nuts from hijacking and manipulating reality, so kudos to those brave souls.

I actually did read through the entire manifesto; it seems to be a cut and paste job, with HEAVY excerpting from the White Nationalist blogger "Fjordman" over at Gates of Vienna, and of course, very heavy plagiarizing from "Industrial Society and its Future" (the Unabomber Manifesto). Interestingly, prominent anti-jihadists such as Robert Spencer are mentioned in the manifesto as well (over 40 times!). I think the media needs to be calling/e-mailing/knocking on Mr. Spencer's door and asking him some pertinent questions, and perhaps an interview with Geert Wilders should be on some enterprising journalists to-do list. Also, the Smirnoff vodka poster-girl Pamela Gellar from Atlas Shrugged blog as well; another creepy psycho, if you ask me.

A nation in mourning defies gunman by sticking to open, tolerant society
DOUG SAUNDERS
OSLO, NORWAY— Globe and Mail Update
Published Sunday, Jul. 24, 2011 8:26AM EDT
Last updated Sunday, Jul. 24, 2011 12:13PM EDT

As it became increasingly apparent that the man responsible for the violent deaths of at least 93 people in Oslo on Friday was an organized terrorist who was part of a Europe-wide anti-immigrant political movement, Norwegians vowed to defy him by sticking to their open and tolerant values.

Police launched two raids in downtown Oslo as they interrogated 32-year-old Anders Behring Breivik, who admitted to setting off a car bomb in central Oslo, killing at least seven, before going on a 90-minute shooting spree at an island summer camp for supporters of the governing Labour Party, killing at least 86 people, some reportedly under 10 years old.

It seemed certain, both police and Mr. Brievik’s lawyer said, that he acted alone, though his ideas were part of a wider movement.

... Police and politicians vowed to investigate a movement whose supporters range from authors of popular books on “Eurabia” and “the Muslim tide” to more violent figures like Mr. Brievik who also appear to have ties to little-known extreme-right groups. At the same time, officials vowed not to let this investigation interfere with Norway’s legendary openness.

26. Norway gunman claims a London connection and links to the EDL
Edited on Mon Jul-25-11 06:05 AM by Turborama
Breivik's 1,500-page manifesto details links with far-right groups, but EDL issues statement condemning the attacks

Mark Townsend in Oslo and Matthew Taylor guardian.co.uk, Sunday July 24 2011 21.40 BST

Anders Behring Breivik, the man behind the Norway killings that left 93 people dead, began his journey in extremist rightwing politics at a small meeting in London in 2002, according to his online manifesto, and may have attended a far right demonstration in the UK as recently as last year.

In a 1,467-page document that contains chilling details of his preparations for Friday's attacks, Breivik outlines his UK links, claiming he met eight other extremists from across Europe in London in 2002 to "re-form" the Knights Templar Europe – a group whose purpose was "to seize political and military control of western European countries and implement a cultural conservative political agenda".

The manifesto, signed "Andrew Berwick London 2011", contains repeated references to his links to the UK far right group the English Defence League. On Sunday there were unconfirmed reports from one of the organisation's supporters that the 32-year-old had attended at least one EDL demonstration in the UK in 2010.

=snip=

In the manifesto titled 2083: A European Declaration of Independence, Breivik writes: "I used to have more than 600 EDL members as Facebook friends and have spoken with tens of EDL members and leaders. In fact; I was one of the individuals who supplied them with processed ideological material (including rhetorical strategies) in the very beginning."

Edited on Mon Jul-25-11 07:57 PM by fedsron2us
who use the demos as an excuse to get drunk and start a fight. None of them is as smart or as dangerous as Anders Behring Breivik who is in completely different league of right wing crack pot. In addition the EDL like most extreme right and left wing groups in the UK is almost certainly infiltrated at all levels by elements of the UK security services who would have got wind of any plot. I am sure Breivik had contact with the EDL but as with so much here I suspect it is what is not yet known and what has not been said which is really significant. This is why every contact, movement and above all penny this man has spent over recent years needs to be pulled apart and examined.

Edited on Tue Jul-26-11 02:46 AM by fedsron2us
This is long after Breivik is supposed to have been initiated into his 'Templar' group in 2002 ( if it ever existed).

To be honest I am bit disappointed with the Guardians reporting here after the blinder they played over the Murdoch affair. They are making exactly the same sort of leaps in creating guilt by association as much of the right wing press were after the Islamic extremist attacks in London in 2007. In fact most of the British press reporting of this tragedy at all levels has been sloppy and hysterical as Lars777 has rightly pointed out.
