New dispute threatens debt limit negotiations

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New disagreement erupted late on Saturday between congressional Democrats and Republicans over the timetable for increasing U.S. borrowing authority, possibly jeopardizing efforts to avert a default.

Democratic and Republican leaders escalated their fight despite instructions from President Barack Obama earlier to produce a budget plan by Monday that would clear the way for Congress to raise the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling by August 2.

Saying he was "deeply disappointed" by the lack of progress toward a deal to raise the credit limit built around deficit cuts, Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid said Republican "intransigence" was "pushing us to the brink of a default on the full faith and credit of the United States."

The latest flare-up centered around a Republican plan being proposed behind closed doors calling for two installments of debt limit increases and deficit reduction.

...instead of just a lot of grandstanding.

The Constitutional Convention in 1787 met in secret --we'd still be living under the Articles, if the U.S. were even still around otherwise.

Madison kept immaculate minutes, and checked speeches with their authors, and such. They weren't published till 1840.

5. A Parliament maybe
Brown has the guts to face his people. I rather enjoyed how they pressed him and accused him, and he replied back right there on the spot in front of camera's. I don't know if he is lying, time will tell and soon I hope. Can you imagine if our guys did that. Canter or Boner wouldn't be able to stand up to that kind of treatment. Boner would be Big time baby crying.

6. If we had a Parliament...
..a solid majority in the lower house being Republican, you would have had the repeal of PPACA already, and cuts, far in excess of anything either side's put on the table, to major social provision.

Be careful what you wish for... The numerous veto points in our system stymie progress, but cab also stymie the march to catastrophe.
