Republicans Weigh Short-Term Debt Deal, Risking Obama Veto
Source: SFGate

Republicans prepared to force action on a shorter-term extension of the U.S. debt limit than President Barack Obama has requested, defying a veto threat amid warnings that continued stalemate risks roiling financial markets as soon as tonight.

The president would veto a measure to raise the debt ceiling if it doesn’t extend the limit into 2013, White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley said in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Daley warned that “markets around the world” would react negatively to a short-term measure offering less than $2.4 trillion in borrowing authority.

“We’ve got to get past this debt-ceiling vote,” Daley said. “It’s time to get some certainty.”

House Speaker John Boehner, an Ohio Republican, said while he would prefer a compromise package, his party was “prepared to move on our own” if that proved impossible. He aims to announce a framework -- bipartisan or not -- later today to try to minimize uncertainty before Asian markets open, he said on Fox News.

I think the fact that the American public would never hold Republicans accountable means that President Obama can't veto whatever the Republicans hand him, because he would be blamed for the default. Look at this board. Even liberals would blame President Obama for this default. The corporate media narrative is so strong that the American public will give Republicans a free pass, and blame the Democrats, even if Republicans knowingly approve a one-sided extension that the President has promised to veto.

Liberals are expecting him to concede, so he should not disappoint, correct?

11. But the Dems who control the Senate are not much better. Reports have it
that Reid has signed off on a plan that will cut spending but won't raise taxes. Yes the GOP is horrible but I'm not so sure that they are stupid.
Across the Capitol, Democratic officials said Majority Leader Harry Reid was at work on legislation to raise the government's debt limit by $2.4 trillion — enough to assure no recurrence of the current crisis until 2013 — and reduce spending by slightly more. They said that plan envisioned no higher taxes.

2. Obama needs to 14th.
He's waited long enough. He's playing brinkmanship too. Except that he really cares if the US goes to default. The teabaggers don't. They think they don't have to pay their bills and nobody will give a shit. By the end of the week Americans who have a pension fund will have likely lost more value than the debt increase.

They will absolutely use this as election year politics for 2012. I agree with the President, politics need to be removed from this equation considering it could bring down our entire economy.

They want to keep playing chicken, let's play chicken. Fuck em.

5. republicants are only interested in political points by positioning themselves
in a position on the Monday news shows where they can come out and say "we offered a plan, and the dems refused it". Nothing with them is based with reality.

6. Re: President Obama can't veto whatever the Republicans hand him
Agreed, but anything less than the Gang of Six deal won't get through the Senate. OTOH, Roger Wicker (hardly a liberal) indicated the Gang of Six agreement can pull down (in his opinion) 60-70+ votes in the Senate.

Right now, the Republicans would need to pull at leat two votes (most likely Ben Nelson and a player to be named later) just to get passage, and if it's some bullcrap short term cut at the expense of HCR or Medicare, you can count on Franken, Sanders, et. al. to Fillibuster. There are not enough votes for cloture.

8. Rethugs have learn't to successfully call his bluff before
So they are encouraged to do so as often as they please because Obama has never vetoed/refused any ideas the rethugs put in front of him. Why will we be surprised that they feel empowered to call his bluff again?

14. Gop get concessions with no revenue gains in round one
then do the same in round two; threaten default again and again. Insidious extortion tactics on every issue, by tying unrelated issues to debt ceiling. Terrorist demands to blow up themselves along with the global economy. All this to protect a 4% increase for the rich. Obama has to say no and veto, repugs were told of veto and chose that path. Obama can't be held accountable for the path the repugs chose.:dilemma:
