Norway: Police ponder new Anders Behring Breivik charge
Source: BBC News

Norwegian police are considering charging the man who admitted killing 76 people in Friday's attacks with crimes against humanity, prosecutor Christian Hatlo has said.

Anders Behring Breivik is currently facing terror-related charges carrying a maximum 21-year sentence.

If convicted of crimes against humanity he could receive a 30-year sentence, Mr Hatlo told the Aftenposten newspaper.

1. Could he be convicted of both and the sentences run consecutively,
for a total of 55 years, or would 30 be the highest number?

6. there is no such thing as "consecutive sentencing" in continental Europe
AFAIK, it is a specialty of Anglo-American law. We don't focus so much on retribution as on the possibility of rehabilitation here.

3. How could he only be facing 21 years of prison? Wtf?
Shouldn't he be getting sentences for each of the people he killed, also?

4. So you kill 76 people in Norway and don't get locked up the rest of your life?
Why the hell is this conversation even happening.

They'd better be talking about 76 counts of whatever they decide to charge him with.

5. If a person is deemed as a danger to society he/she can be locked up for life
But its a special law that´s extraordinary, and not part of the "normal" legislation or something like that.

The English-speaking media knows this full and well, they just seem to never bother to mention it.

I´ve had to explain this 4-5 times now on DU.

7. Thank you for your patience
Perhaps what seems to be the retardation of most of our media will be a little easier for you to bear if you realize that the intention of the media in the USA is not to inform or to educate the public. The main intention of the media here is to inflame and incite the public into hysteria; either through the dissemination of fear, or else through the proliferation of anger. If they can accomplish that, then it means that their media business will garner more attention from the public, which translates into the creation of greater revenue through the increased value of the advertising that they sell. If they can prove that more people are tuning in to their intended confusion and distortions, then it means that the value of the advertising that is sold on their media will be worth more money. And that, my friend, is the definition of capitalism.

I have slightly more respect for most politicians and used car dealers. Move along folks! Move right along. Nothing cynical to see here.

10. Forced psyichiatrical treatment i guess
Not sure what that means, but it won't be nicer than prison probably. I think it can be done in prison, he might just be supervised by someone or whatever.

Having said that, Norwegian prisons have such a high standard that east europeans are not afraid to go to jail here, but that's a different issue.

He won't suffer in some horrible cell, because we don't have that. But i will be amazed if he gets out in my lifetime. And i'm one year older than he is.

the 30 yr sentence...every 5 years he is reevaluated to see if hes still dangerous...if so...another 5 years and so on...that is one way to keep him off the streets.

And give him like two years for each count?
