1. Why is that breaking news?
The world averages one about that size every day. Nobody lives there and it isn't likely to cause a dangerous tsunami.

2. The world may average one a day but if it happens close to the US, people probably want to know...

...about it.

3. actually, we've been having between 5 - 9 EACH day lately
we have however been averaging one 6+ per day.

This one was directly on the fault, and was the site of a swarm of 4 (5+) quakes in 2009.

it bears close watching.

5. Why Are You Upset About This Post......
concerned about the waste of precious digits?

I have relatives on the west coast, therefore I am interested in seismic activity there and thank the poster for posting.

8. Who said I was upset?
I was just wondering whether there was something more to the original post.

I have relatives on the west coast,

That's nice. I used to live there and few people cared about an earthquake in the 5s hundreds of miles away. They happen all the time.

Where... etc.

You can see that multiple posters have seen "earthquake" in breaking news and run with the assumption that it means a great deal more than it does. Asking whether there's more to the story than what was posted may very well have kept some readers from making the same mistake.

Your post OTOH... not so much. :)

12. You seem terribly unhappy with nearly everything and everyone on DU,
particularly when it concerns societal well-being.

Wouldn't you perhaps be happier elsewhere?
