NC Dems Block GOP Attempt To Override Gov's Veto Of Voter ID Law
Source: TPM

Democrats on Tuesday fought off an attempt by Republicans in the North Carolina House to override Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue's veto of a voter ID bill passed by the GOP-controlled state legislature last month.

A party line 67-52 vote left Republicans five votes short of overriding Perdue's veto, the Associated Press reported. But one Republican made a parliamentary maneuver that will allow Republicans to bring the issue up again.

"This bill is an insult to me. It's an insult to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King," State Rep. Rodney Moore (D) said, according to the AP. "Right now, I feel like my rights have been raped. Yes I do because there is no substantive problem in North Carolina with voter fraud and this is purely, purely an attempt at voter suppression."

House Speaker Pro Tempore Dale Folwell (R) argued it didn't make sense that people "have to show a photo ID (in Winston-Salem) to panhandle" but didn't have to show ID "to do the most important and sacred thing that we do as citizens," the AP reported.

12. Has anybody read this bill?
"Notwithstanding subsection (a) of this section, any voter without photo identification shall be permitted to vote a provisional official ballot."

You can vote without an ID, it's just provisional. It's the same procedure as if you showed up to a precinct to vote and didn't show on the registration rolls.

And

"Each county board of elections shall accept applications for and issue North Carolina voter identification cards to registered voters in that county. The voter identification card shall be valid only for purposes of voter identification and proof of voter registration under this Chapter and available only to registered voters of this State. No fee shall be charged or collected for the application for or issuance of a North Carolina voter identification card."

If you can't afford ID, they will issue it for free.

Other than this being a solution in search of a problem, what were the supposed civil rights objections again?

14. Even if they issue it for free, it doesn't mean it's easy to get.
There was a video going around today of a kid in Wisconsin having to do things like prove bank account activity in order to get this free ID. Oh, and they attempted to charge him for it anyway. Oh, and Walker is trying to (or has) shut down multiple DMV locations that serve the very areas where people are likely to need free ID to vote.

17. I think if you can get to register and vote
You can also get to the place to have an ID issued.

It is in the law that there will be no fee.

3. at least they managed this.
apparently the NC dems will not stand up for women's rights when it comes to the anti abortion law she vetoed.
but here's some good news; i'll take it. after seeing what's going on in WI this is pretty big.

4. Repugs in WI yelled VOTER FRAUD over and over and passed a new voter suppression
here last week or so. I think I read there have been maybe 8 cases of voter fraud in WI in over 10 years. Of course we had Walker a repug gov to happily sign it.

7. Echoes of what's happening in NM
Our Republican Gov & Sec'y of State are having possible voter fraud investigated so they can justify the same voter suppression tactics.

11. It's necessary to suppress the minority/liberal vote ...

5. The Repig legislature in NC is enacting all the same ALEC-based crap
as in other states. Except the Gov (thank you Gov Perdue) keeps vetoing it and they - along with the freaking 'blue dogs' keep overriding her vetoes. At least they couldn't override this one.

10. Bottom line: This goes on NOT because this is a conservative nation ...
IT GOES ON BECAUSE THIS IS A LIBERAL NATION --

WITH 80% WANTING AN END TO THE WARS --

AND 76% AND MORE -- 83% OF CATHOLICS -- WANTING MEDICARE FOR ALL !!

If you need any further proof, consider the reality that RW has to have total control

over our CIA/corporate-press --

Everything the RW has is bought by their wealthy backers --

Koch Bros DLC infiltrated the party -- because Democrats support corporate/fascism -- !!

And, Obama had to run as a fake liberal to get elected ---

16. I agree - this is possibly the most important activism we can do now
A lot of these new laws are designed specifically to make voting difficult for people who have problems getting on the internet or keeping a stable home address. Websites and mailed-out fliers aren't going to cut it for those folks.

We need boots on the ground personally assisting voters with lining up required certifications and physically bringing voters to the DMV, patient people who know the rules and are prepared to record video of any unusual difficulties they run up against.

Voting rights for the poor, sick, elderly, disadvantaged, and downtrodden -- I did not expect this to be the struggle of my lifetime. I was hoping for universal health care, green energy, fair trade laws... and instead we're stuck re-fighting the civil rights battles of the 19th and 20th centuries all over again.
