Debbie Wasserman Schultz says GOP seeks ‘dictatorship … spark panic'

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), chair of the Democratic National Committee, said Wednesday that House Republicans are trying to impose “dictatorship” through their tactics in the debt-ceiling negotiations. She said the GOP rhetoric could “spark panic and chaos,” which she called “potentially devastating” to the economy.

The chair telephoned POLITICO to express “significant disappointment in where … Republicans have allowed this debate to degenerate.”

“Aren’t we at the point where the closer we get to chaos, the more concern that there should be about coming to the table and compromising with Democrats?” Wasserman Schultz asked. “This is not leadership. This is almost like dictatorship. I know they want to force the outcome that … their extremists would like to impose. But they are getting ready to spark panic and chaos, and they seem to be OK with that. And it’s just really disappointing, and potentially devastating.”

Specifically, Wasserman Schultz cited a movie clip House Republican Whip Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) had played Tuesday during a closed-door meeting of the House Republican Conference. The brief clip was from “The Town,” and Republicans said it was intended to send the message that “we’re all in this together.”

2. This chaotic mess.
The Rethugs are the rich ones with all the money and stocks etc so they stand to lose the most when they ruin the economy. It was a warning! Glad to see them finally wising up.

13. Have you ever checked the list of the 50 richest members of Congress?
Edited on Thu Jul-28-11 06:33 AM by No Elephants
Democratic members of Congress are very well represented (no pun intended), even in the top 10.

18. They have independence from the Koch-types by being wealthy.
Republicans just take the Koch money and don't really need to be independently wealthy. They are minions, anyway.

10. Bachmann was right!
"What I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out, are they pro-America or Anti-America? I think the American people would love to see an expose like that."

5. Debbie is awesome. Keep it up! Howard Dean should be proud.
You're a person? Republicans walk away. You're a corporation? Republicans will make it rain our taxpayer dollars in subsidies and tax cuts in exchange for lobby cash.

15. Only Republicans give tax breaks and "incentives" to big business?
And only Republicans turn their backs on human beings?

Maybe that paradism reflected reality in 1930. Dunno. Wasn't around then. I only get to read the press releases. But, it hasn't been so for a long time. And the sooner Americans, esp. Democrats, admit that, the better off those human beings will be.

22. 'Debbie' seems like a kind of typical, centrist, 'Pro-Growth' Democrat that is watering down
the Democratic juice that might be used to actually help the poor and working class.

But, I really don't know much about her.

Was just upset that she was 'appointed' DNC head, by another corporate Democrat. That...is how the elections are 'stolen', if you ask me.

What do I know, though?

9. It's an evil cult.
The republican party has become a treasonous religious cult underpinned by a criminal enterprise. There seems to be no way to stop their growing influence. Apparently, the nation is doomed, at least as a democracy.

16. This is what our media has devolved into. So and so said this. So and so said that.
And they're supposed to have an important role in our democracy--on the side of individals, not government, which is the reason they got First Amendment protection in the first place.

Pitiful.

anymore. Well, people DO watch TV news -- they just don't GET much of it.
