Judge strikes circumcision ban from San Francisco ballot
Source: MSNBC

SAN FRANCISCO — A San Francisco judge Thursday struck a proposed circumcision ban from the city's November ballot.

The proposed ordinance is "expressly pre-empted" as it "attempts to regulate a medical procedure," San Francisco Superior Court Judge Loretta Giorgi said in a tentative ruling issued a day earlier. "Moreover, it serves no legitimate purpose to allow a measure whose invalidity can be determined as a matter of law to remain on the ballot after such a ruling has been made."

After hearing oral arguments Thursday morning, Giorgi said, "I will stick with the tentative ruling and have this stricken from the ballot," public television station KQED tweeted.

Michael Kinane, an attorney for proponents of the ban, argued that circumcision was not a medical procedure. He also said the ballot measure included an exception in cases where circumcision was needed for health reasons.

12. Do you know what the procedure costs in hospitals?
It's also completely unnecessary.

It reminds me of a story in Graham Chapman's autobiography about certain midwifes he worked with during his residency who started performing episiotomies simply because the rules were changed allowing them to perform the procedure instead of doctors. Today it's a common procedure handed off to interns and other lesser officials when it doesn't need to be done.

If a parent wants it done for religious reasons that's acceptable to me, but as a "medical" procedure 99.99% of the time it's unnecessary.

15. Save the hoody!

I don't expect much agreement on the matter regardless of laws, facts, rationales.

10. What A Sad Day It Is
that you and I seem to be the only two people on this thread so far who seem to "get it". And what is even sadder still is that there could even be a judge anywhere in San Francisco who doesn't "get it" either.

2. why is that even on any ballot?
so anybody on this site had one. so I suppose we should have out umbilical cords cut o_O. As well as bye bye stem cell research. Doesn't sound like a liberal measure to me. X_X sounds more like an anti religion fring extreme left measure.

13. Except, of course, that female "circumcision" is nothing at all like male circumcision
Otherwise, yeah. I guess it's the same thing. Or something.

21. Actualy it is almost the same
female circumcision involves removing the protruding section of the clitoris, the remainder of the clitoris is left in tact, it is actually quite a large organ. The effect of this is to massively reduce the females capacity for pleasure.

The removal of the protective hood on the male organ does exactly the same thing, it almost totally removes the responsiveness of the tip of the penis, the most sensitive part, thus almost completely destroying the males pleasure.

The circumcised male has no place discussing what they have lost, as they would have absolutely no idea - while the uncircumcised male knows full well the amount of pleasure derived from the fully functioning tip.

Male circumcision is an arcane form of butchery which is not practiced anywhere except the Jewish community and the United States. There is absolutely no medical benefit to it, and there are considerable medical risks associated with it.

The most significant findings to come out of male circumcision is the surprising result that circumcised males have a significantly increased predisposition to sexual violence towards women derived through their almost totally diminished tactile responsive tissue in their penises requiring significantly elevated force in sexual activity to achieve a sexual response tending to sexual violence. The study has shown that this is reasserting itself in the predisposition for violence in pornography.

Basically only Americans still circumcise, the rest of the planet has again moved on and left you stuck in the 70's.

24. Your information is anecdotal and generally incorrect.

Do you have a citation for that, or did it spring fully formed out of your own fantasies?

Knock yourself out with your hyper-sensitive foreskin. Makes no difference to me.

5. Ironically, that bill might pass muster in Texas...
...since our state now requires any woman seeking an abortion to get a sonogram. And not the jelly-on-the-belly type of sonogram, either - the other kind.

20. I don't see a problem
outlawing a procedure with no medical necessity.

If someone wants this done they can choose to have it done when they turn 18.

26. Why the "I had to put up with it, so you should too"? We KNOW this attitude is ALWAYS wrong...
The thing that mostly convinces me that circumcision is harmful is the way that the circumcised argue in favor of it.

By your logic, rape victims would be arguing passionately in favor of rape. Haven't seen too many threads like that, though.
