House vote on GOP debt plan delayed
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) -- House Republicans called off a vote Thursday on Speaker John Boehner's plan to raise the nation's debt ceiling while enacting sweeping cuts in government spending, but the possibility remained that the measure could come up on Friday.

The delay in voting on the proposal revealed a deep rift within the GOP that could undermine the party's latest attempt to avoid an unprecedented national default and stave off potential economic catastrophe.

Boehner was unable to muster sufficient support from his own caucus to guarantee his proposal would pass in the face of expected unified Democratic opposition.

After more than four hours of delay, House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-California, told reporters there would be no vote on Thursday night.

4. Going back to rules committee for changes to Pell Grants and the
possible inclusion of a Super BBA. So it will be dead and buried in the Senate. Allegedly all the Dems are sticking together at No, plus 25 no's or lean no's by Repubs. There are also about 30 undecided.

5. Do I take it that Boehner has trouble finding the votes because
of ultra-rightists who demand more draconian cuts and another vote before next year's election, rather than because of rightist-moderates who realise that targeting certain tax breaks and loopholes and limiting defense spending would also make sense?

And, do I take it that House Dems are all singing from the same sheet on this?
