NoW investigator Glenn Mulcaire 'told to hack'
Source: BBC

The private investigator at the centre of the News of the World phone-hacking row says he "acted on the instructions of others", his lawyers have said.

In a statement Glenn Mulcaire's legal team said any suggestion he acted unilaterally was "untrue".

It comes as the mother of murdered schoolgirl Sarah Payne said she was "very distressed" after being told she may have been phone hacked by Mulcaire.

The investigator was jailed in 2007 after admitting to phone hacking.

1. What he hasn't said is who by.
He decided to come out following the recent enquiry. The Murdochs said they had not know his legal fees were being paid by NI and promptly stopped them soon after the hearing. Given there are ongoing civil suits against Mulacaire that meant he was royally stuffed.

At the risk of starting a subthread, just what *was* the phosphate source for that algae bloom?

3. "I was just following orders..." That didn't work in 1945, and it won't work today.
I guess Mr. Mulcaire has no moral compass of his own.

6. "no moral compass of own" is a widely spread disease nowadays
even if it's been there forever, it creates more problems than it solves

it's kind of 'gambling' for winning something that very few can win, and the rest only lose

11. It works to the extent that it implicates superiors in criminal conspiracy...
...but no, it doesn't, and shouldn't, get him off the hook personally.

7. He'd better deliver the information into the hands of several friends and family...

... as well as a safety deposit box with instructions to go to The Guardian if he is harmed. Because there's a chance he might be found dead in his home before the inquiry.

13. You're not implying you've diagnosed him with clinical depression, are you?
You know, that kind of depression that suddenly comes on out of nowhere, makes you dispose of any critical information you possess in an untraceable manner, tie your hands behind your back, shoot yourself in the back of the head, and die of a heart attack before the bullet strikes...
