House rejects Senate Dems debt-limit bill

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican-led House on Saturday rejected a Senate Democratic bill to raise the nation's debt limit just three days before the deadline to avert an unprecedented U.S. financial default. President Barack Obama and lawmakers remained at loggerheads on any possible compromise.

With tensions high at a rare weekend session, the legislation failed on a 246-173 vote that was largely symbolic. The Senate has yet to vote on the bill.

Saturday's result, however, could pave the way for negotiations on a compromise with Tuesday's deadline on the government's ability to pay its bills fast approaching. Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., were heading to the White House late Saturday.

Obama, in his weekly radio and Internet address, warned that "there is very little time" and pleaded with both Republicans and Democrats to stop political gamesmanship.

Surprise! :sarcasm:

Edit to add that although we all knew this would happen, it just puts an exclamation point to what an obscene travesty this whole affair is. It's nothing but base partisan politicing and shows the utter contempt the republicans have for the American people. Lest the forget, those ARE the people they're supposed to be serving - all 311,000,000 plus of us.

This crap is getting old. Real old.

12. Rumor is that the Senate bill included some "deeming"
of budgets future.

Budgets.

If it does, I'd have voted against it.

10. How was the House able to vote on the Senate bill before the Senate did?
Isn't a Senate bill supposed to be voted on by the Senate FIRST and then be sent over to the House for a vote?

I hope someone can explain this to me because I am very confused.

11. The problem that I have with all this is that ...
Obama has shown his hand.

Right now since the Repugs have refused anything that Obama has
put on the table with concerns to SS and MediCare, because the
Repugs don't want their over-lords to pay 1 extra penny in tax.

If Obama were to get a clean bill to raise the debt limit; come
September when negotiations for the 2012 budget start in earnest,
they will demand all those cuts to SS and MediCare back on the
table. This time with no debt limit time table to hold them back
they will sit on their hands until Obama caves in. And, he will
cave in, because he wants to be considered "The Great Compromiser"
(if there is such a word).
