Nader Has Qualified Nowhere, Plans to Everywhere | LA Times
Nader Has Qualified Nowhere, Plans to Everywhere
A Reform official says the party is likely to endorse him. And some in the Green Party still want their 2000 nominee atop their ticket again.

By Nick Anderson, Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON — His first try at qualifying for the ballot in a key state fell short. Nor is he yet certified anywhere else.

But Ralph Nader, the independent candidate many Democrats revile as a spoiler, claims steady progress in his quest to put his name in contention for the presidency in every state. He is starting his own party, the Populists; rebuilding once-frayed ties to the party that nominated him four years ago, the Greens; and even working with remnants of the Reform Party founded by Ross Perot.

The Reform Party, which espouses fiscal discipline and clean government, nominated conservative commentator Pat Buchanan in 2000. Now Nader, an anti-corporate crusader well to the left of Buchanan, could become its standard-bearer.

1. I doubt he will qualify in Missouri as well.
Edited on Sun Apr-18-04 11:36 AM by ikojo
In order for a third party candidate to make ballot status he would need 10,000 VALID signatures of registered voters submitted to the REPUBLICAN secretary of state by the end of July.

In order to get 10,000 VALID signatures he really needs at least 15,000 signatures. Most people are none to happy with the Nader name and will not be as willing as they were in 2000 to sign a petition.

Also, he will need to use paid petitioners since he has snubbed the Greens. In 2000, the Greens got the required signatures WITHOUT using paid petitioners. The accuracy rate was an astounding 80%, I believe.

Most third parties run a presidential candidate and other statewide candidates in order to build the party. With no real party apparatus behind him, I think Nader may find it difficult to find volunteers to collect the needed signatures. The group that collected signatures for Nader in Missouri was composed of GPUS members (Kansas City) and G/GPUSA members (St Louis and other locales around the state).

The GPUS (Green Party of the US) convention is in Milwaukee this June and they will be voting on who to nominate for president. The G/GPUSA (Greens/Green Party of the USA) will also be having a meeting in June.

4. For the first time in my life
I would, if asked, refuse to sign a nomination petition. I never thought I would do that, but I will.

I have always been of the opinion that anyone deserves at least the opportunity to put his or her name on a ballot if he or she is civic minded enough to want to.

Nader, however, is not being civic minded. He is being self-centered and smug. He does not deserve to be on the ballot. Wow! that was not easy to say! This is just a very sad, dangerous man.

5. Ask my nephew what he thinks of Ralph Nader
Jon has 30 reasons he hates that living dog turd.

29 reasons are the elctors from New Hampshire and Florida that Nader took away from Al Gore.

The 30th reason is the Iraqui bullet that severed Jon's spinal cord and left him a quadraplegic at 23.

BTW--today is Jon's 24th birthday. He had to have a nurse help him mark his ballot for Kerry, and he can't wait for November...

Thanks for destroying Jon's life, Ralph.

6. But...But...But....Don't you know Gore would have done the same?(sarcasm)
Stupid Nader backers. They are to blame. They decided they really just had to make their fucking "point". They are to blame for Iraq and I put the responsibility in their hands just as much as Bush. I don't want to talk to anyone who voted for that wacko Nader. They are all ignorant scum.

11. Insert the word "significantly" in front of "responsible" and the naderite
fools can't employ the Fliesherian reasoning employed above that it was "all inept Gore's fault."

The fact of the matter is that if Gore had run a better campaign Nader wouldn't have mattered AND if Nader had dropped out of swing states like he (according to Moore) promised, Gore's inept advisors wouldn't have mattered. Now I know nader voters are not the brightest among us, but even they must understand that events can have more than one significant cause.

Ralph Nader is significantly responsible for everything Chimp did that Gore wouldn't have done--which includes killing and maiming people in Iraq, giving tax cuts to the rich while destroying the economy, busting unions (which Nader loves to do as well), and every other Chimp outrage.

12. I'm Very Sorry to Hear About Your Nephew
Zanti Regent. You and your family will be in my prayers.

I would tell you exactly what I thought of Ralph Nader's claim that Al Gore would have invaded Iraq. However, since I just started this message with prayers, I'll refrain.

13. "Thanks for destroying Jon's life, Ralph."
What do you think of John Kerry's vote to let Chimpy send him over there in the first place?

or Tom Daschle's, for that matter? or Edwards'? or Hillary Clinton's? or Jay Rockefeller's?

Sorry to hear of your tragedy, but Ralph wasn't the one who voted for this war.

16. No, see, that's all wrong.
The people who actually enabled the war get a free pass, because the man who ran in 2000 and said nasty things about Al Gore (some of which were sadly true, and I like Al a lot) cost Al the election...even though he really didn't, and mathematically Nader's run did not cost Al enough votes to lose the election he actually won but had stolen from him.

Go figure.

7. I totally share your view
I'm usually willing to sign anyone's nomination petition. I haven't been asked, thankfully, but I will refuse if given the opportunity to sign Nader's.

in fact I hope some smug naderite comes round with a petition just so I can give them a piece of my mind (although actually going door to door sounds like more effort than they are willing to put in)

20. Nader didn't make it on the ballot in NC in 2000.
He definitely won't this time.

North Carolina is usually an assured vote for the Republican presidential candidate, but this year NC might be a swing state.

From what I am hearing, so many conservative North Carolinians are disgusted with Bush*, a lot of them are planning to vote Libertarian. The Libertarian Pary is well-organized here and usually runs full ballots for local, state, and national candidates.

Libertarians are going to hurt Chimpy in this election and hurt him bad. It's the obvious choice for people disgusted with the Chimp but unwilling to vote Democrat.
