"Three soldiers travelling in a 1st Armored Division convoy were killed during a small arms ambush" at around 7:00 pm (1500 GMT) on Saturday, the military said in a statement.
A spokesman for Sadr said a militiaman and three other Iraqis were killed in the firefight between supporters of the radical cleric and coalition troops.
A US convoy was attacked near a Spanish base in Diwaniyah and returned fire, according to a spokesman for Spain's forces in the coalition. An AFP correspondent said an armoured vehicle and several shops were still burning Sunday.
