Broadcasters seek ban on local satellite radio
WASHINGTON, April 16 (Reuters) - U.S. radio broadcasters have asked federal regulators to bar rival satellite radio services from offering content tailored to local markets, according to a petition obtained on Friday.

The National Association of Broadcasters, which represents radio conglomerates like Clear Channel Communications Inc. , filed the request due to concerns the up and coming satellite services are trying to replace local radio outlets.

Both XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. now offer traffic and weather for several cities on its national service, but are barred from using ground-based transmitters that extend service into hard-to-reach areas to air programming aimed specifically at a local market.

"This foray into local content is directly contrary to ... repeated and express promises that satellite radio service would be limited to delivering national programming to serve the unserved and underserved," according to the petition filed this week and obtained by Reuters.

13. Not for me. In my opinion whomever released these pictures for all the
world to see the truth is more respectable and honorable than the American Media. People who calculate in their minds what is the best option for their cause are total liars to themselves and to whatever created our Universe.

I've seen a few CNN reporters come clean on this. (At least on CNN International.) They had been covering wars and killings for so long and always their pictures were edited for 'American Family Viewing'. Then one day a mortar fell on them and they almost get killed, wounded badly. They decided right then that the sanitzing of the truth in fact was/had been all along promoting this type of butchering.

You decide.

2. poor clear channel
they may want to rethink their rotten business practices and their shitty play list that they force every station to play. the only reason they stay in business is they bought everyone-sat is going to knock them out of the game in the coming years because you get what you pay for-the programming you want, instead of the lasest "talent" cc is "promoting".

3. God forbid
The media companies have to actually compete in the marketplace. This is a capitalist economy, after all. Rather than compete, they'd rather regulate their competition out of existence.

6. Capitalist when it works for them...
regulated when it doesn't.

Neo-conism in a nutshell.

4. When something that is free
like broadcast can't compete with a subscription service that costs money, the thing that's free really must suck.

Broadcast needs to change or die.

9. Amen to that, these folks make me sick.
If I knew how to do the little vomit guy, he'd be right *here*.

This seems like free-market capitalism at it's finest, and they have a problem with it?

By the way, Air America is on XM satellite radio.

But aside from my beechings, does anyone care to predict how this will turn out?
