Anti-Bush bake sales sweep U.S.

SAN FRANCISCO - Raising money to unseat U.S. President George W. Bush was a cakewalk Saturday, when a liberal advocacy group said it organized at least 1,000 bake sales across the United States to raise money for the effort.

The MoveOn political action committee, the political branch of MoveOn.org, co-ordinated bake sales from Maine to Hawaii that offered such treats as Beat Bush Brownies and No C.A.R.B. (Cheney, Ashcroft, Rumsfeld, Bush) Meringues. Early estimates Saturday placed the national tally for the bake sales at about $250,000.

In San Francisco's Dolores Park, Maitreya Badami, a 35-year-old criminal defence lawyer, served Bush Im'peach'ment Pie, cupcakes emblazoned with pink peace symbols and Karamels for Kerry, for Democratic contender John Kerry.

1. Seems like a waste?
With George Soros dumping millions of dollars into MoveOn, I don't see the point in wasting thier time with this - or is this due to Congress going after the 529s for violating the BCFR law?

2. Ever hear of community?
Building things from the grassroots is one thing the DLC dominated Democratic Party has forgotten about as they've gone whoring for the same corporate cash that has so corrupted the GOP. MoveOn, the Greens, the Deaniacs all know the power of organizing at the grassroots, of getting the word out face to face, one human being to another.

It's not about the money.

53. I agree... it is good publicity that money can't buy...
It also brings out supporters that would never had even thought about doing something.

How many don't do anything because they weren't asked??

We have to provide opportunities for supporters to become activated.

GOPers always play up the George Soros criticism. I wonder why you are bringing it up?

Most of us here have participated in at least one or more of MoveOn events.

8. MoveOn specifically stated......
that they wanted to find a way to get ALL of their members physically involved and this was a good way to do it.

Just wondering if anybody here participated in one of the bake sales. Ours in Akron, OH didn't get coordinated in time. They've moved the date to next Saturday, but still do not have a location set. What was the trick to getting your sale planned so quickly? Our coordinator is being told that we have to have a license from the health dept. to go ahead with this!

52. Alexandria Virginia
Had a wonderful sale outside a local bookstore. The weather was great, the food was tooooooo goood, and I spent 15 bucks on brownies, soft chocolate chip cookies, and a couple of little muffins.

There was a constant flow of moveon people, kerry supporters, ex-deaniacs (often these being the same person.)

I hope they do it again, and do it often.

10. A Waste????
What a ridiculous statement. Money is not the end-all. The MoveOn activities are bringing people of all persuasions together. They are finally leaving their couch's and TV's and coming together in dialog. Together they combine forces and willing give of their time and money to defeat an attack on our Democracy by this Bush Administration. Young, old, working, retired, rich, poor, Democrat, Republican, Independent....all are proud to "waste", their time in order to end the destruction that the Neocons have laid on us. "Waste of time," I think not!

is dumping millions into MoveOn, I think his big bucks have gone into the Media Fund organization, or some name like that. MoveOn start during the Clinton impeachment period, over the internet with ordinary people who were against the impeachment. I think you are confusing MoveOn with the other organization.

48. One person
might give the cause a lot of money, but the real effort is engaging people and having them participate. It's only by true pressing the flesh and meeting new people that the true message is spread. Dean knew that value--500 donors of $5 each is 500 votes versus two contributors of $1250 is two votes. Don't knock grassroots efforts, because liberals know that it's people that count, NOT the money they contribute. Repukes can brag about their $2000 donors, but when it comes right down to it, we've got the people who know the truth.

6. I patronized the NYC bake sale in
Union Square yesterday and it was great how many people were there asking questions, signing up to get involved (me) and bashing Bush*.

It was a great little consciousness raising/community building event in the middle of the Farmers Market, so lots of traffic and very reassuring to see so many people gather and offer support.

26. A couple
<snip>
Consider the following. After a month where Bush spent heavily on campaign ads attacking John Kerry and where the economy finally turned in a good performance on creating jobs, the president's political position has gotten substantially worse, not better.

The latest Pew Research Center poll, conducted April 1–4 and overlapping with the release of March's strong jobs report, has his overall job approval rating at 43 percent—the worst rating in any public poll of his presidency—with 47 percent disapproval. The same poll has his approval rating on the economy at just 39 percent, with 53 percent disapproval.

In the latest CBS News poll, his economic approval rating is even worse: 37 percent approval/56 percent disapproval (30 percent/59 percent disapproval, almost two to one, among independents). And that's at the end of a strong economic month for the administration.

http://www.americanprogress.org/site/pp.asp?c=biJRJ8OVF&b=45771

<snip>
The stakes could hardly be higher. Mr Brahimi's report on whether the 30 June deadline for a handover is still possible will be a defining moment for Mr Bush's nascent presidential campaign. Polls already place the President six to 10 points behind his Democrat challenger, Senator John Kerry, and the key approval rating on his handling of the war has slipped from 51 per cent to 44 per cent in recent weeks.

The trend numbers I got off of Daily Kos who keeps tracks of the numbers. On the Pew site you would have to gather up the numbers from all the press releases. The April release verifying the 43% number is here:

37. it was a great idea
Not just the fundraising (which is always needed) but it DID get people out and working for change.

I helped at the sale cited in the article in Prairie Village, and in the red state of Kansas we sold $500 worth of stuff *an hour*. Lots of families, kids, great people who care about their country and want to do something. There was a signup table where new Democrats were registered, volunteers were gathered for the Kerry campaign, and precinct workers in Kansas were recruited.

All this and not a single freeper showed up to mouth off at us. In Kansas, this is progress.

So, it wasn't just a bake sale, it was people in the community coming together to take our friggin' country back. And I'm sure this is what scares the rightwingers.

I think it would be a great way to make loads of money for the cause. A lot of people from other countries would like to see Bush go, and they buy on Ebay.

One of the reasons repugs do so much better at organization and activism is because they don't spend as much time shooting down one anothers ideas for such. They just do it.

Edited on Sun Apr-18-04 08:20 PM by Melinda
We had dozens of bakers, helpers, and people buying our goodies to help Beat Back Bush and "Bake Back Our Democracy"!!

This was a first time even of this kind for many of those who attended, and the reception was amazing. One wonderful man donated $100 and left with a delectable Guiness Stout Cake - talk about an expensive dessert! ;)

We registered 2 new voters and had countless others sign our MoveOn pledges too.

I think the most moving part of the day for me was listening to Devon (age 7) and Miles (age 7 and holding the sign below), explain that America should never make war on people who have not hurt us, and that the President of the United States should never, ever lie. Those of us listening became quiet and cried softly while these wise little children spoke so honestly and matter of factly - children simply 'get it' - and they grabbed our heartstrings.

Miles in action!

Media there too - we made the evening news!

Defeating George W. Bush - Priceless!!

Randy provided refreshments

This gent provided levity ;)

And we're doing it again - as many times as it takes - till we have finally removed Bush* from OUR WhiteHouse. :)
