Myers: Syria Needs to Secure Iraq Border

WASHINGTON - Syria needs to do more to stop foreign fighters from crossing into Iraq (news - web sites), the top U.S. military officer said Sunday after a border ambush left five Marines dead.

Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the stability not only of Syria and Iraq, but also of the entire region is at stake.

"We know that the pathway into Iraq for many foreign fighters is through Syria. It's a fact. We know it. The Syrians know it," Myers told CNN's "Late Edition."

The U.S. effort to organize an international troop presence in Iraq suffered a setback when the new Spanish prime minister, fulfilling a campaign pledge, said he would withdraw the 1,300-member Spanish contingent in Iraq as soon as possible

1. Syrians don't have to lift a finger

The US is responsible for the internal security of Iraq, not the Syrians. If the US forces can't handle they bidness, they should turn the responsibility over to somebody who can. Syria is under no obligation to assist in any manner or form. And frankly, Myers should be fired for this implicit threat to a sovereign nation without the consent of Congress. Who does he think he is?

5. Why *WOULD* they is more appropriate to ask...

Why would any Arab nation want to keep violent militants in their own countries? I mean, militants who would normally be working against their own government are suddenly fleeing to Iraq to fight the USA, just as the Arab regimes encouraged militants to run and fight the Soviets in Afghanistan. If you were Assad or Mubarak, would you give up this golden oppurtunity to cement your own powerbase?

...needs to stay up to date with the news. Spain has already said that it will maintain its presence in Afghanistan, and will even double the number of Spanish troops already there.

This addition will make it 500, doubling the current number of 250.

7. By the way, I thought it was part of our "overall strategy" to attract

as many radicals and terrorists into Iraq as possible, because we can kill them there. Wasn't this the freeper talking point for the better part of the fall and winter of 2003-2004???

Given this brilliant strategy (called the "magnet" strategy or some such nonsense :eyes:), shouldn't Myers want the militants streaming into Iraq at a fairly constant rate? Y'know, cuz that's where we want to confront them? Or has that strategy changed? And if it has changed, why has it changed?

Please remind all freepers of their former assurance on the magnet strategy next time they excoriate Iran or Syria for "allowing" militants to "enter into" Iraq.

12. So what was in the note from Bush, that Powell hand delivered to Syria?

There was a big battle with 'insurgents' that were supposed to be from Fallujah, on the Syrian border, yesterday. Fallujah is 200 miles east of the Syrian border. Now, Myers is talking about 'foreign fighters' crossing the border from Syria. So, that story is already being rewritten.

By the way, Myers, you are a foreign fighter yourself, by way of Kuwait. Just in case you forgot.
