Being in Nebraska and very much against the death penalty I admire Governor Morrison and I am very sad about this news.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- Frank Morrison, the Democratic governor in a predominantly Republican Nebraska during the tumultuous '60s, has died. He was 98. Morrison died early Monday in McCook, 200 miles west of Lincoln, after a battle with cancer, a nursing supervisor at McCook Community Hospital said.

Morrison served as governor from 1961 to 1967. His dream was to serve in Congress, yet he was never elected in five tries between 1948 and 1970.

But the fact that a Democrat who was opposed to the Vietnam War and capital punishment could be elected governor in Nebraska in the 1960s attests to Morrison's charisma, said former governor and U.S. Sen. Jim Exon, who encouraged Morrison to run for governor.

(snip)

Morrison remained active through his senior years, speaking out against the war in Iraq and opposing capital punishment as a witness during legislative hearings.
