Pentagon Raises U.S. Death Toll in Iraq - 706 dead soldiers now

WASHINGTON -- The number of American troops who have died in Iraq since U.S. forces invaded in March 2003 has surpassed 700 and the number wounded in action has topped 3,600, the Pentagon said Monday.

The death toll stands at 706, although fewer than 700 individuals have been identified by the Pentagon because it has not completed the required next-of-kin notifications for a number who died in recent days. Just last Friday, the Pentagon said the troop death total stood at 685.

April has been the deadliest month since the invasion, with at least 99 U.S. troops killed so far.

Of the 706 deaths recorded by the Pentagon, 511 came after President Bush declared on May 1 that major combat was over. Two Department of the Army civilians also have been killed and two U.S. soldiers are listed as missing.

3. KIA counts are less than 600.
The 700+ number includes things like "accidents," though there has been concern that this was being used to deflate KIA numbers.

6. No.
If someone is hurt but is breathing while being airlifted out and then dies, he is not in the total killed count.

7. Thank you for that clarification!
The reported wounded looks very low as well? How do they fudge that number? Do they include only permanent disfigurement or disability as "wounded"?

8. And according to past history...
1-2% of the wounded die. So add another 30-60 deaths.

9. They count all the wounded
even those that are wounded and return to duty. That is what they are supposed to do, but how do we really know with this crew.
