Cracks appear in Bush circle

"Some, with a large dose of irony, were even quietly applauding Howard Dean — then the fiery front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination — for raising the hard questions about the war's origins and purpose that no one else seemed ready to do.

Six months later, the split inside the Republican ranks has become headline news. Washington Post writer Bob Woodward's Plan Of Attack, the book on the origins of the Iraq war published this week, is already the talk of the country.

Woodward's biggest revelations come from Powell himself, who said in interviews for the book that he opposed the war camp led by Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Vice-President Dick Cheney.

Just as startling was the revelation that Bush notified his own secretary of state of his final decision for war on Jan 13., 2003 — after having informed other key members of his administration and the Saudi ambassador to Washington."

18. here we go again
Powell deserves no respect. His image is entirely a media creation. Check out his history at consortiumnews.com

His ignoble career goes all the way back to covering up My Lai. Having proven to be a reliable stooge, his ride up the ladder was greased all the way.

2. If Powell had any self respect, he would have quit
He knew the sacrifice, he knew soldiers would die. His lack of speaking up is frankly something that fills me with disgust.

3. Maybe Powell....
has been threatened in a way that cannot be imagined.
It is difficult to feel that he would betray himself, America, the World and the American Troops in the way that he has done. Perhaps he felt that by staying he could minimize the damage. Then again it could be that he is just a go along to get along type of person. His behavior is somewhat stange. Most likely he has a lucrative job waiting for him after this term. By showing loyalty a corp. will trust him to be loyal to them. Just theororizing.

The Woodward book has done no damage to Bush and anything else will melt away within a week.

4. He has a job with the
Carlyle Group. It's been published several times the last couple of years. I am not sure he was ever better than the rest of the crew. I think he just disguised it better. He is as bad as the others. Actually, maybe even worse because there are sooo many people that still want to believe he is not what he is.

6. He is a military man so takes orders.
He got where he was from taking orders so why would we think he would do anything else? They had to have him as he was better liked than the President. He has done his job, what the President said to do. I also think he is gone. He or they will not have him, if Bush wins. They have used him up and he has used up his good name.

8. Powell never had a "good name" to start with...
...he has been one of the firefighters involved in the Army's attempt to cover-up My Lai, Desert Storm Syndrome, and any other fire over the last 30+ years that threatened the country's positive view of the Army.

He is a NeoCon, make no mistake about that.

Powell has said he's not coming back even if (God forbid) Bush ends up with a second term.

14. Please.
Powell warned his superiors all along the way. His duty was not to quit, but to carry out orders. That is what Powell is.

If anything, Powell has been proven right on nearly everything, and the Neonazicons are being exposed.

Powell's cooperating with Woodward was subtle payback for being the Secretary of State and the last to know.

12. Here's the cabal mocking Powell
...it's from the third extract from Woodward's book:

<<They turned to the current secretary of state, Colin L. Powell, and there were chuckles around the table.

Cheney and Wolfowitz remarked that Powell was someone who followed his poll ratings and bragged about his popularity. Several weeks earlier in a National Public Radio interview, Powell had said, "If you would consult any recent Gallup poll, the American people seem to be quite satisfied with the job I'm doing as secretary of state."

He sure likes to be popular, Cheney said.>>

"Once you invade- you OWN this country". (meaning all its problems- and that is paraphrased)

16. Powell's lying at the U.N. was a critical part of the war build-up, though
Bush may still have had his war, but that speech was the sugar coating for the bitter pill. Powell has plenty of blood on his hands.

19. Powell comes out with another denial….
I have to say that it does play into what Woodward said on LKL last night, i.e., that the decision wasn’t irrevocable. It’s just that a decision was made on the plan being considered absent Saddam having a sudden encounter with death….

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said Tuesday
morning that Saudi ambassador Prince Bandar bin Sultan wasn't informed in
January 2003 that the U.S. had made a decision to go war with Iraq.

In remarks broadcast live from the State Department, Powell said that Bandar
was briefed on the war plan that the U.S. was considering.

Powell said that Bush didn't decide to go war until March.
"He made the decision in March, regardless of what speculation there is about
when the president made the decision," he said. "He made the decision in March,
and we all received that decision together."

21. If Powell wants to get back in with the DARK SIDE he must become..........
more accommodating to it's needs. That little spat he had with the CIA speech couches before he made the dog-n-pony show at the UN did not serve him well either. Maybe Negroponte headin up the Iraq shindig will be a helper for him. :donut:

We had 12 UN resolutions stating that we as a UN member have the right to enforce the resolutions if broken. All of them were broken.

27. Israel and US
break UN resolutions everyday...what's your point exactly?
You don't think Iraq is the only country in the world to break UN resolutions do you? They just use it to make a case to invade Iraq. I mean, when are we going to invade Israel for ignoring UN resolutions?

23. Now it’s Rummy’s turn to deny….
I suspect Woodward should be breaking out the tapes quicker than even he thought…

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Tuesday that to
his knowledge, President George W. Bush hadn't made a decision to invade Iraq
when Rumsfeld and other officials met in January 2003 with the Saudi ambassador.
At a Pentagon news conference, Rumsfeld was asked about an assertion in a new
book by journalist Bob Woodward that during a meeting with Saudi Ambassador
Prince Bandar bin Sultan, Rumsfeld pointed to a map of the war plans for Iraq
and said "you can take it to the bank this is going to happen."
According to Rumsfeld, Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of
Staff, may have shown Bandar a map but "there was certainly nothing I said that
should have suggested that" a decision to go to war had been made.
The Woodward book, "Plan of Attack," is listed as recommended reading on the
Bush-Cheney campaign Web site.
