Neo-Nazi rally, counter-protests peaceful in Wisconsin

WEST ALLIS, Wis (Reuters) - Members of a neo-Nazi group and counter protesters peacefully rallied within yards of each other here on Saturday.

According to local police, five arrests were made and no one was injured as members of the National Socialist Movement organization and a local coalition of community groups rallied in the afternoon at the West Allis City Hall.

"Make your people proud and stand up for your race," said Jeff Schoep, the leader of the group, to two dozen supporters.

The neo-Nazi group had planned its rally as a response to fights between two groups of African-American youths at the Wisconsin State Fair on August 4 which police said degenerated into racially charged violence outside the fair. Seven police officers were injured and two dozen arrests recorded.

4. It was very clear that West Allis gov't didn't want this rally

and was very concerned (maybe scared shitless would be the correct phrase) about conflict between the group and counter-protestors.

The location of the rally resulted from the proximity of West Allis to the State Fair Grounds and a free-speech area (no permit required) next to West Allis city hall. I haven't seen any evidence that neo-nazis were residents of West Allis or received support from residents of West Allis.

12. My Daughter Lives 6 blocks from the scene of the "gang" disturbance

There is no visible support for the Neo-Nazi's in her neighborhood. People did not want the skinheads there.

The original disturbance started in the State Fair grounds between two local groups of youths. The private security force hired to police the Fair escorted the youths outside the grounds and the altercation continued on the street, and escalated into passer byers being yanked off motorcycles and out of passing cars.

My daughter and her boyfriend blamed the private security force for not detaining the youths in the Fairgrounds until Police were dispatched to arrest the miscreants. Shuttling the trouble makers outside only transfered the problem to another jurisdiction.

Yet another example of "private outsourcing" of public sector jobs gone wrong.

16. I think your daughter is correct. At the very least they should have sent one

group out the front gate and the other out another opposite direction. I once ended up between two groups who were fighting when they were taken to the hospital. The nursing staff asked me to help identify the groups so they would not accidental place them in the same area of the hospital. One of the groups was from my village.

13. I heard rumors that some of the Nazis came in from Michigan

Yesterday I caught a bus from Madison and while in route to the protest there was talk about a column of bikers flying Nazi flags heading east toward Milwaukee/W.Allis. Not sure of that but I thought I would throw it out here just the same.

I also saw a group of men in their mid thirties wearing black shirts saying WHITE POWER and they were on the ANTI PROTEST SIDE. Not sure who they were but decided to stay clear of them!

but I'm not sure anyone has indicated where the protestors actually came from.

It's 2011 and there were weeks of advance knowledge the event was going to take place. People had opportunity to come from near and far.
The good news is the event happened and did so in a mostly peaceful manner.
