Severe weather warning as Hurricane Katia tail approaches (UK)

A severe weather warning covering northern Ireland, England and Scotland has been issued by the Met Office, with forecasts saying Britain will be lashed by the tail of Hurricane Katia, causing gale-force winds of up to 80mph late on Sunday and Monday.

The gales, combined with heavy rain, could cause "significant disruption" for Monday morning commuters and, where high winds coincide with high tides along western coasts, there could be flooding.

Never thought that an American hurricane could reach the British Isles.

1. Wow, 80mph winds. That's a tropical storm at least; perhaps even a Cat 1.

I wonder how often this occurs. I assume that rain from the remnants have reached them before; perhaps it is more common than we think... Katia never hit land; there hasn't been anything other than colder water (which is still a bit warmer if following the Gulf Stream Current) to disrupt its formation.

She was just a depression yesterday but still packs enough of a punch to be a nasty storm.

At least she'll discourage marching for a couple of days.

OWN National agency that gives the hurricanes their names....so it is an American hurricane.

9. Depressions form off the west Coast of Africa :

not hurricanes. Sometimes those depressions just fizzle out.

What was eventually named Katia , following tropical storm status , was depression number 12 this season.

12. Hurricanes do reach Europe.

I was under one here as it passed the east coast. Then I flew to Holland, where it caught up with me for another go.

Then I was working in Norway and the remnants of one ploughed through, knocking the power out in our fjord. Damaged some roofs.
