Ind. Rep. Hostettler(R) Detained at Airport (Handgun in briefcase)

Rep. John Hostettler of Indiana was briefly detained Tuesday when airport security workers found a handgun in his briefcase as he was going through a checkpoint on a trip back to Washington.

The five-term Republican congressman was preparing to board a US Airways flight at Louisville International Airport when the gun was found, said his press secretary Michael Jahr.

"Apparently the congressman had left a handgun in his briefcase and forgot it was in there and took it to the security checkpoint, where it was detected and they detained him briefly to make sure he had no ill intent as they should do," Jahr said.

Jahr said Hostettler is an avid sportsman and has a permit for the weapon, but he was not sure what type of handgun the congressman had and whether it was loaded.

1. Can you imangine what they would say if this was a democrat?
I thought this was a crime even if you forgot, even if it is just a joke. Shouldn't he have been arrested?

22. AND charged with "terrorism" BUT we are not all equal,...
now, are we,...

How on earth can anyone "accidently" forget a freakin' handgun in a briefcase? *cough* *choke* Unless, they have no worries about being subjected to the various federal crimes associated with so doing.

Welcome to the world of the unequal where justice and fairness is in the hands of the few and imposed upon the many.

26. Meeting with the chairman of the Gun Owners of America Association

GOA Executive Director Larry Pratt (left) meets with Rep. John Hostettler (R-IN)

GOA Calls For Hearings on CCW Legislation
-- Hostettler Bill Would Allow for Reciprocity Among States
By John Velleco

(Washington) -- Gun Owners of America is calling on the Congressional House leadership to hold hearings on a bill, sponsored by Rep. John Hostettler (R-IN), to allow for reciprocity between states for concealed carry permit holders.

H.R. 950, the Secure Access to Firearms Enhancement (SAFE) bill, was introduced by Rep. Hostettler in March of 2001, but has since not moved from the House Judiciary's Subcommittee on Crime.

GOA is now urging Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and Crime Subcommittee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-TX) to hold hearings and vote to move the legislation to the House Floor.

"H.R. 950 has languished for too long in Committee," said Larry Pratt, GOA's Executive Director.

"Decent gun owners face confusion and uncertainty over the status of their CCW permit when leaving their home state with a firearm. Worse yet, many gun owners leave their self-defense firearm at home to avoid any liability, thus leaving themselves and their families more vulnerable to criminal attack," Pratt said.

4. People who forget where their guns are
Those are the people whose guns are invariably found by toddlers or criminals. I am not against guns by any means (our home has one), but PLEASE, if you are going to be a gun owner, PLEASE try REALLY HARD to (at the very least) remember where your f*cking firearms are! Wotta dumbass.

5. Lock him up.
You don't "forget" you've got a gun in your carry on briefcase, unless you are an irresponsible gun owner OR you expect to get special dispensation due to your office.

Either way, lock him up.

I don't know his politics, but I can think of a 3rd reason. He might have been trying to get aboard with a gun in order to showboat his success to help support the continuance of Patriot I and/or passing Patriot II?

6. If he was on his way to Congress...
... it would be illegal to detain him in any way!

It is in the Constitution.

15. So, don't arrest him. Just 'detain' him. ( ;- )
And don't charge him with anything. Just designate him a "person of interest".

Don't imprison him, just hold him for questioning until hostilities cease (skip questions about his speechs in the House).
And oh yeah, First Thing: No lawyers!

Hostettler is probably the biggest asshat of all. And he is one of the 10 Most Dimwitted Members of Congress, according to The Progressive.

10. He's also in a TOUGH relection battle.

John Hostettler- Indiana 8th Congressional District 51-46 56-42 Bush
Highly Competitive:

Indiana’s 8th Congressional District was named the “Bloody Eighth” because of its reputation of close elections stemming back to 1984 when Frank McCloskey beat Richard McIntyre by 4 votes, 116,645 to 116,641. This district is the epitome of a swing district. According to the “2002 Almanac of American Politics,” this district at one point during the 1970s elected four congressmen in four successive elections. Since 1994, Rep. Hostettler has survived four close reelection bids. Yet Hostettler has raised a mere $5,018. He is the exact opposite of Northrup, having been out- spent, in two of his last three races. Rep. Hostettler has grown accustom to the close elections in the district. Expect this race to be heavily targeted by Democrats, who have a top notch candidate in Jon Jennings.

someone at the airport. It was just after the Spain bombing and I didn't want to run in to a random check just in case. And I have a CCW license.

21. Vyascheslav Mikhaiylovich Molotov
Soviet Foreign Minister for a million years, always carried a briefcase wherever he went.

It became the CIA's obsession for years and years. What was in Molotov's briefacse?

Finally, they developed a plot to find out. When he visited the United Nations in New York, they developed this elaborate, costly scheme to steal his briefcase and replace it with an identical copy.

After months of planning they succeeded.

The briefcase was empty except for a loaf of black bread and a revolver.

18. I confess I went to the NRA show
It was in my hometown. I had a laugh that they had big signs up warning them they'd have to pass through a magnometer to go to the Cheney dinner.

I didn't attend the dinner or any of the political events. Just went to see the gear.

If I'd have went to the dinner you'd have heard it on the news cause a crazy lady would've gotten thrown out for giving the VP the finger.

I did hear the local Ducks and Pheasants were on Red Alert while he was in town.

23. Yet another example
of the rich and privileged doing whatever they want. If I was caught with a gun in my briefcase at the airport I'm sure I would be arrested and charged with a crime. The rule of law my ass. Why doesn't the rule of law apply to Hostettler. This kind of shit infuriates me. In America there are two sets of laws, one set for the rich and privileged and another set for us little people. I despise our Government. Dumb all over.
