Ex-Boeing executive pleads to conspiracy

By MATTHEW DALY
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- A former Air Force official pleaded guilty to conspiracy Tuesday, admitting she secretly negotiated for a job with the Boeing Co. while she was overseeing the Pentagon's consideration of a multibillion-dollar contract with the aviation giant.

Darleen A. Druyun, 56, of Vienna, Va., made the plea in U.S. District Court to a single count of conspiracy, which carries a maximum five years in prison.

"I deeply regret my actions and I want to apologize," she told federal Judge T.S. Ellis III, her voice breaking.

Druyun is to be sentenced Aug. 6 and faces a fine of up to $250,000 with possible prison time. She declined to comment as she left the courtroom, as did her attorney, John Dowd.

U.S. Attorney Paul J. McNulty said he hoped the plea "sends a message" to other government officials in charge of commercial contracts.

5. The guy who hired her
Mike Sears was also fired from his position as chief financial officer.

An interesting thing to note is that it was Boeing that informed the govt of the hiring indiscretion. They made the revelation to their own financial detriment.

7. This is not the end of the story
I really feel bad for Ms. Druyun. She was revered in the DoD as being a tough customer by defense contractors.

What this inquiring mind wants to know is who in the hell at Boeing was so frigging eager to recruit her while she was still employed at the Pentagon? No one seems to be talking about that, and Sen. McCain (who is anti-Boeing tanker contract, and seems to have an inside line to the dirt) hasn't shut up yet.

There is more story begging to be told.

8. Hmmm….Billy Tauzin might have seen the writing on the wall….
Thus, turning down the job at the last minute….me thinks, theoretically, he could still be charged for the same crime as Ms. Druyun…..

Did Tauzin Negotiate Lucrative Job With Pharmaceutical Lobbying Group While Crafting Industry-Friendly Medicare Drug Bill?
