U. to keep ban on guns in challenge to new law

University of Utah trustees, in defiance of the Utah Legislature, voted unanimously Monday to maintain its 27-year-old policy prohibiting students, faculty and staff from bringing guns onto the Salt Lake City campus.

The U. Board of Trustees directed the administration to pursue a "quick and definitive resolution" of the constitutional claims relating to the school's gun ban -- a process that probably will end up before state and federal courts.

"Because we feel strongly about this issue, we must continue the court challenge to find out what they are willing to say about the law and our ability to do this," said trustee and former U.S. Sen. Jake Garn.

The U.'s challenge comes in response to Senate Bill 48, passed by the Legislature earlier this year. It was signed into law last month by Gov. Olene Walker, who agrees with lawmakers that only the Legislature -- not U. trustees -- can set gun policy.
