Thousands of protesters to 'Occupy Wall Street' on Saturday
Source: CNN

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Egyptians did it for democracy. So did people in Tunisia, Yemen, Bahrain and Syria. Now, activist groups are hoping Americans will launch their own uprising -- in the form of thousands of protesters descending on Wall Street this weekend.
Occupy Wall Street is a "leaderless resistance movement" spearheaded by activist magazine Adbusters. Organizers want people to swarm into lower Manhattan on September 17 and set up camp for two months, then "incessantly repeat one simple demand."

1. Sounds like a farce.
Organizers want people to swarm into lower Manhattan on September 17 and set up camp for two months, then "incessantly repeat one simple demand."

What's that demand? They haven't decided yet.

2. They're there. I doubt that they're going to set up any camps,
though. The NYPD will do its usual job with the barricades that seem to appear instantly at almost any time.

3. I've heard precious little about this on the news
Even the more liberal media outlets seem to be ignoring this. Maybe the protesters just want to draw attention to the damage that running our country for the sake of corporate shareholders is doing to our economy, the middle class, etc.

7. Not sure, but according to this story from a few months ago, the media ignored
Edited on Sat Sep-17-11 01:26 PM by Dover
a large Wall Street protest (much like they ignored huge anti-war protests prior to Iraq invasion) and would likely do it again.
So maybe it will be covered on various social media sites instead.

The revolution at home will apparently not get any coverage while we focus on revolutions abroad.

Media ignores huge Wall Street protest

This past week, over 10,000 protesters gathered on Wall Street to demand financial reform.http://trueslant.com/allisonkilkenny/2010/05/01/media-ignores-huge-wall-street-protest/

11. China tried to block coverage of a protest in Shanghai, but...
an American media person covered the story and, whala! It was in either March or April this year. But I wonder what good is it to protest WS? I suppose if it gets coverage, then the complacent public will just change the channel.

14. Thanks! Unconfirmed reports that twitter is blocking text "Occupy Wall Street".
Hmmmm... I do wonder how the big social media and tech owners will handle domestic protest..

Will they censor? Are they already censoring?

16. Ok, but why today?
I'll agree that something is usually better than nothing, but wouldn't it make more sense to do this on a weekday, when there actually people working in those buildings.

Maybe that would be more likely to get the media's attention, or even do some bit of good.

17. They plan to camp out and stay for weeks.
And apparently there is a globally coordinated effort.
Protests are also planned for financial districts in Madrid, Milan, London and Paris.

20. So Wall Streeters will work from CT and NJ. Good deal, no NY City income tax
You don't have to pay NY State and City income tax on days spent working elsewhere.

21. According to the link they want to "incessantly repeat one simple demand."
but they have not decided what the demand is yet. It seems to me if you are going to have a demand you should decide what it is before you start protesting.

23. So many options to choose from!
I think there are plenty of common issues to get behind, and Wall St. is a mutually reviled and non-partisan venue that is central to them all. So pick your particular issue and come join the people's party!

25. So they are going to be incessantly repeating many demands
simple and complex. One or two demands can be heard and addressed but a hundred or a thousand demands will not be listened to.
