3. Another video here, this one has sound
and was apparently taken by someone real close to the impact area.

11. I doubt the pilot had much control at all.
Sounds like the elevator came off for some reason, further down-field. When he rolled into that dive, it was all over. Probably died thinking 'I'm pulling up, why is nothing happening'.

13. That's exactly what happened, the crowd was sprayed with debris
traveling at extreme speed. There was no time for anyone to react.

Air shows are dangerous things, but the participants and the crowds seem willing to take the risk. I just hate it when the ones at the air base buzz my neighborhood. I always feel like I've had some kind of a near miss when nothing terrible happens.

17. The engine is a 27-liter V-12 that weights close to 2,000 pounds.
Spinning at a good rate of RPM, it crashed nearly vertically into the ground. As all those spinning parts were smashed apart, they would have flown radially out... into the crowd.

The impact was like setting off a giant "Bouncing Betty" land mine.

1. Propellent charge launches the mine into the air
2. Bursting charge, surrounded by hundreds of pieces of steel balls, explodes.
3. Steel balls become like a 360° shotgun blast.

8. There was an auto racing crash at LeMans in 1955 that killed 80 PEOPLE
as the result of flying debris, so in a way, it's incredible that so many survived this.

15. The engine mowed the crowd, literally
When the car disintegrated on impact, the engine kept going at very high speed and it's what killed most people.

My uncle's wife's parents were at that very race and they were barely spared by the engine, and they described it as a giant cannonball going through the crowd.

10. i soloed at 15, a stunt pilot friend lost power and the Tiger Moth he was flying dove into a housin...
suburb.. he managed to put it into an empty concrete lined canal 20 feet wide in a nearly vertical dive. when he was flying his P51 and saw me riding my bicycle home out in the country he would buzz me with it.. screaming in at tree top level about 350 mph.. then pull straight up with a wave, rotating the wings 360*s. it was a mirror polish that sparkled in the sun. really exciting. i was 16 then in 1962, i worked at the flight service station at the airport to pay for my lessons, got to hang out with all the WW2 veteran fighter/bomber pilots and listen to their endless war stories. my trainer had the second most hours in B17's that survived the war, he had over 1000 hours in P51 fighters. was a test pilot for all the new SAC bombers at Castle air force base. he also flew F86's in Korea. my father was a drunk, these great men took me under their wing and led me to a better life, with better values. i am for ever thankful.

the P51 hit at the perfect angle to throw the heavy dabree up and away, over a lot of people.. you can see the 12 cylinder 1400 pound Allison engine trailing fire bouncing up and far away from crowd.

14. I Read the article. Apparently the LA Times loves religious people
because each individual is thanking the lord for their making it out ok. Do they think the "Lord"
chose those other people to die and not them? When ya get right down to it an imaginary being
had nothing to do with it. They just got fucking lucky that plane wasn't coming down on them.
Count themselves as lucky assholes. Lucky selfish assholes who apparently believe the others were
chosen to die.
