Cincinnati.com MONTGOMERY – Tom Wilson Sr., the creator of beloved comic strip icon Ziggy, died of pneumonia Friday at Jewish Hospital in Sycamore Township. He was 80.
Mr. Wilson spent most of his working life in northeast Ohio, where he worked for Cleveland-based American Greetings for more than 35 years. After suffering strokes and lung cancer, he moved to a Montgomery nursing home about nine years ago to be near his son, Tom Wilson Jr. of Loveland, who has produced Ziggy since 1987.
The short, bald, big-nosed, barefoot and frequently befuddled but eternally optimistic character marked 40 years in syndication in June.
But Ziggy wasn’t Mr. Wilson’s only creation. At American Greetings, he led the team that developed such blockbuster characters as Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears and helped launch some of the first lines of humorous, photographic and romantic greeting cards. Mr. Wilson also was a talented painter. His works appeared in exhibitions throughout the U.S., including the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Society of Illustrations annual show in New York.
