Poll: Elizabeth Warren leading Scott Brown
Source: The State Column

A new poll released on Tuesday shows Massachusetts U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren surging.

The new survey, conducted by Public Policy Polling, gives Ms. Warren a slight edge over Massaachusetss U.S. Senator Brow, 46 to 44 percent among likely voters. The two-point gap between the candidates falls well within the survey’s 3.5 percent margin of error.

The launch of Elizabeth Warren’s candidacy has been an undeniable success,” said Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling.

The survey involved 791 Massachusetts voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent, suggesting Ms.Warren and Mr. Brown are in a dead heat. The poll comes just one week after Ms. Warren announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate.

Not bad for a first week as a candidate.

5. He has zero hope
of making a presidential run in the Rethug party, he makes Mitt Romney look like Rick Perry. Yes, the Repukes liked him when he won Teddy Kennedy's seat, but that faded as soon as they realized that he was going to vote like someone who had to win re-election in a very blue state.

I expect the money changers down at the temple to really put up some big bucks to defeat Warren, she's pissed a lot of them off. This early poll means nothing, we'll see what things look like after months of negative advertising.

6. Can someone explain to me what has happened to Mass.?
I live in the deep south & there literally is 0% chance that a Democratic Candidate could win a US Senate Seat...But I thought Massachusetts was Liberal Country. How can the polls be that close?

I fear the country is beginning to turn hard to the Right & seriously dark days are coming.

For the Bush Kerry Presidential battle.

Then, we used pencils only, but now, you have an option to use a simpler machine and most people do.

I stick with a pencil.

However, machines do the counting.

I assume the same is true across the state.

The papers can be counted as backup but that only happens under special circumstances and when it does, SCOTUS calls it off. That appears to be the precedent.

11. That is because our current "Democratic" administration is not really
Democratic and doesn't want the traditional Democrats to be heard on issues -- especially economic and environmental issues.

45. As I recall, Obama did not got to Massachusetts to support the Democrat
running against Scott Brown until the very last minute -- when it was far too late.

Obama fell down on the job. That is all there is to it. And the "Democratic" candidate as I understand it was not a hard fighter.

You have to be tough, believe in what you say and get out there every day if you want to win elections. Our so-called "Democrats" just don't have that kind of grit. It's a sad day for working people with a Democrat in the White House fills the place with bankers as Obama has done.

13. Every now and then a few slip by
Seriously, Brown backed his assz into Ted Kennedy's old seat by running against an opponent who was cocky, arrogant, aloof, and decided to go on vacation at a crucial point in the campaign instead of running the race all the way to the end. She honestly thought her name recognition would carry her to victory; especially against a little-known republican state senator with no significant legislation accomplishments to speak of.

Also, many people who knew Martha Coakly, including one of my relatives who's crossed paths with her on several occasions, didn't have good things to say about her and how she related to the everyday Jane and Joe. Talk about Mitt looking uncomfortable when rubbing elbows with the masses, Coakly was/is the same way. Plus, from what I read, most of her support came from Democrats in the Western part of the state, which was later evident as the turnout in Boston was much lower than expected. And the mayor and governor initially had come out in support of Michael Capuano, but threw their support behind Coakly when she became the party nominee.

But that was then and now is now. And I personally think Scottie's days are numbered in Washington. Massachusetts is an odd state politically in that we've had many republican governors. However, when there's only a single republican who people can identify with Massachusetts, then I think I can say with some certainty that the state will not be veering right any time soon.

Just my opinion.

33. I live in Boston, the most liberal part of the state. At election time, most
of the signs in the small stores in my neighborhood (North End/Waterfront) are for Republican candidates.

IMO, Boston is a lot like Hollywood. The younger folk are trending Republican.

The FDR effect is dying out, thanks in large part to the DLC philosophy.

24. This Mass resident thinks she'll win easily
Edited on Tue Sep-20-11 08:11 PM by MannyGoldstein
Scott Brown won in the first place because Mass Democrats were furious at Candidate Change turning into President Stay The Course. There was little Democratic enthusiasm for voting for yet another Democrat who might go hard right once elected, and the Right was fired up over the Democratic stumbling. IIRC, Brown received about the same number of votes that McCain had gotten in 2008, but there were far fewer Democratic votes, of course.

Things are different now. First off, Warren is not the kind of Democrat who'll go hard right after being elected: in fact, she's persona non grata in the White House precisely because she stands firm for Democratic principles. Second, Scott Brown has shown himself to be a nasty buffoon between his various votes and statements, and the swinish louts running his campaign. This time, if Warren makes it to the general election, I'm certain that Dems will turn out in droves and defeat Brown.

As more people get to know Warren, and understand more about Brown (which I'm sure the Mass Democratic Party will make sure happens), Warren's lead will open up.

28. He's a sitting senator, and he hasn't really done anything crazy
In fact, he seems to get attacked by people like Palin and a few real right-wingers here in the area for not being conservative enough, which makes independents think he's not that bad a guy.

I suspect that this is still a pretty disconcerting number for him. She just launched her campaign and she's already ahead? That's huge.

Its way to early to read anything else in these polls, but with this level of traction I am feeling pretty dang good. If Elizabeth keeps her head down and works really hard all the way through this election, I believe she will win.

25. Long way to go but........
The whole Scott Brown election was a fluke in MA politics. This state is a fairly true-blue state. Given Warrens' public exposure and her commitment to helping real people (not the fake corporate people the Supremes fantasize about), I think she is a formidable opponent to Scott "Playgirl" Brown.

Despair and complacency both lose elections.

Regardless of what politics junkies think, she does not have the name recognition in Massachusetts that Brown has. Many interviewed on the street had no idea who she was. She is going to need many ads, which means much money.

And she is going to have to fight the "bookish, out of touch, Harvard elite from out of state" rap they are already trying to hang on her.

She is also going to have to fight the flat out love affair Massachusetts media has with Scott Brown.

The DNC and prominent Democrats better give her a hell of a lot more help than they gave Coakley, namely zero on the part of the DNC and way too little way too late on the part of everyone else.
