West Hollywood to Ban Sale of Fur Garments
Source: The New York Times

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif.— This is a small city, a mere 1.9 square miles, with about 36,000 residents. But lawmakers here nonetheless see themselves as national trendsetters.

Early Tuesday morning, the City Council unanimously approved an ordinance that would ban the sale of fur apparel — the first such ban in the nation, city officials believe. A final vote will take place in October before the measure becomes law.

The ordinance is only the latest in an ever-growing list of eye-popping, often symbolic measures that legislators here have passed in hopes of pushing animal rights and other causes onto the national stage. The city was among the first to ban cat declawing, sales of inexpensive handguns sometimes known as Saturday Night Specials, and the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores (though no pet stores in the city sold so-called companion animals).

“This is a tiny city, so it’s mostly symbolic,” said Councilman John D’Amico, who sponsored the fur ban. “I think the impact will be heard from here to Fifth Avenue. People will talk about what a fur ban means in a new way.”

12. It does get pretty chilly there at night.
I lived in Miami and moved to Los Angeles for a year and was amazed how cold the nights could be. But I would never wear fur anyway.

13. I'm from Oregon, so it never seems cold enough here in LA to justify more than a sweater
and even that is optional unless you're going for a long walk outside.

5. Not so sure I agree with this approach
banning things which are otherwise legal.. what if some other town wanted to ban condoms, or rap music, or dancing?

14. Communities do this kind of crap all the time.
If the citizens don't like it, they overturn.

Look at the "dry" counties in the south, as an example, some of which try to go "wet" with or without success, depending.

Some communities outlaw discharge of firearms within their city/county limits.

And wasn't there a state that outlawed sex toys for awhile, there?

16. There's a shop here in London
which sells vegan shoes. Not sure if they remain edible after they've been worn.

But thanks for expressing SO much concern over the mote in my eye, while ignoring the plank that's likely in your own. :hi:

21. Love your reply. I am a vegetarian and do not wear
fur or eat animals. Before I even became a vegetarian, I gave away all my furs to charity after reading about the horrendous torture and deaths of these poor creatures. I must admit that I still have some leather shoes because I have foot problems and my old leather shoes are comfortable. But now since I am retired and only wear athletic shoes, I have been switching to manmade materials.

22. I'll admit, it's hard to find good faux leather dress shoes.
Kalso (the Earth shoes link I posted above) used to make some great ones, but they've since discontinued both pairs I liked. :(
